Let's All Stop Ragging On John Mayer For A Minute

And take a moment to bash Eric Clapton.

Laces Out Dan! 01-31-2008 10:27 PM

The Malmsteen ones are hilarious.

Laces Out Dan! 01-31-2008 10:30 PM

Also...John Mayor deserves no ragging. He is hilarious..and even does have some great songs. Like this one.

Laces Out Dan! 01-31-2008 10:46 PM

Speaking of Shredding...thats something John Mayor can do. I watched him on a blues tour. Clapton was actually on it as well..great guitar player.

You know I use to hate Wonderland because I saw it as a hattrick of aweful:

1. I thought it was a Dave Matthews rip, vocally anyway. And of course a pop-cash in on the Adult Contemporary Acousitc revolution.

2. Because he was talking about High School when he'd finished (dropped out) of college long ago.

3. It promoted Bro-dom.

But over time I had to appreciate that it was at the very least a well written song. And what I loathed about John Mayer wasn't his fault, that the Howie Day's of the world were more of a violation of the first three than Mayer was, and I understood that you have to break in before you can do your own thing a lot of the time. Daughters was a let down, but his most recent work, which is entirely not my thing, was much much better and I think the flack he once caught was more a hatred of the movement at the time, and less a hatred of him. he's a decent artist, albeit not my cup of tea, and should be respected as such.

infusician 02-01-2008 02:53 PM

Personally, I think John Mayer and Eric Clapton are great musicians. To survive on their music talent (v.s. drama like, let's say, Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse) says a lot.

right-track 02-01-2008 03:06 PM

How dare you compare Amy Winehouse to Britney Spears?
Drama?
If your referring to her drug problem and the fact that she's an arse...fair comment, but don't use that old smackhead Clapton as a contrast.
Winehouse oozes talent...when she's sober and clean.

i saw it as a huge jack johnson rip off,.....

however, if you just look at it lyrically, its a wonderful song,........but sometimes i find myself letting my own jadedness pass judgement on something it has nothing to do with

sleepy jack 02-01-2008 06:15 PM

Bit unfair to call him a Jack Johnson rip off seeing as John Mayer debuted before he did. Anyway I just think John Mayer is dull, I mean he's a good guitar player but I just find his songwriting so boring. He's still leagues ahead of his second rate knock off with a political twist Johnathan Rice though.

sleepy jack 02-01-2008 10:21 PM

John Mayer was already on his second album by the time Jack Johnson was debuting.

Jack Johnson  I see you've retracted what you said before.

I have to say, I too have a greater affection for Mayer after the live versions. I love "I Don't Trust Myself" (real title??), and "Why Georgia".

John Mayers' music is far more introspective and deep. He's definitely not writing about Curious George... Wonderland I guess sounds similar if you aren't really listening. Mayer is also more accomplished, and I don't think they're really in competition together??

Also, I think that "No Such Thing" was intended to be reflective, and kind of a "message to youth" (wow, that sounded lame). It's like you want to just tell these kids to open their eyes! I actually emailed the lyrics to my step-bro to remind him or something...

Dr_Rez 02-20-2008 09:33 PM

I wouldn't bash John mayer anyways, i think hes pretty damn good.

AsherM 02-20-2008 10:07 PM

Why bash either? They're both great to me.

Albuminsteadofsong 02-20-2008 10:15 PM

John Mayer is talented. If you ever see him live you'll agree

tkpb938 02-20-2008 10:19 PM

Lol I'm trying to learn Waiting On the World to change on guitar, and ya... he's good. That shiz-nits is hard! At least the chords are anyway, the solo however is easy.

Try In repair and Belief on Continuum, they are both extremely good songs.

I agree with Crowquill and how John Mayer is pretty boring. His songs to me don't have much soul in them, and I can't really connect with them. Maybe that is my problem. Plus he isn't that innovative. He is only a popular guitar player who is somewhat good at guitar. It ticks me off how people who don't know anything about music call him one of the best of this generation because there are SO many better guitarists.

sleepy jack 02-22-2008 05:56 PM

No, he really is a talented guitar player he just doesn't make good music or do anything with his talent. He's kind of like Eddie Van Halen in that sense.

ProggyMan 02-22-2008 06:14 PM

I think Eddie Van Halen's a much better guitarist than John Mayer.

sleepy jack 02-22-2008 06:15 PM

I never even compared their guitar skills. I just said they were both talented guitar players who wasted their time making mediocre music.

ProggyMan 02-22-2008 06:24 PM

I know, I was just commenting.

Musique N Style 02-23-2008 04:04 PM

The guy who did those rock overdub videos were hilarious.

But yeah honestly I was knocking John Mayer for being too stuff then I saw him play some SRV and do justice to it....I can't even hate on him anymore, that man deserves respect.

The greatest of these videos is the Joe Satriani one BUT...

the Metallica one is damn hilarious.

Son of JayJamJah 03-07-2008 12:12 AM

I think John Mayer is boring, but he does not suck.
