Are you in a band?

Are you in a band? If so, where does your band rehearse? If applicable, how much do you pay? Lastly, what city and state do you live in? The info you give will contribute to making the world a better place. Thank you, I appreciate your input.

mr. goth glam 01-31-2008 09:29 PM

I listen to bands.

Does that count?

Chim Cham 01-31-2008 09:31 PM

Sure

i'm not currently,...but have been on and off for the past four or five years,....

we normally practiced in someone's garage,......one band practiced in a member's music store after hours (which was great because you never had to bring your insturment, you could just pick something off the wall and all the sound equipment was already hooked up)

most of the time we'd have gigs two or three nights a week (weekends, and normally accoustic on a wed night),....so we played regularly,......practice was normally on thursdays, once a week,....sometimes sunday afternoons too depending on what we had goin on,.......

oh,...how much do you pay?,....

at first you'll play for damn near nothing, unless you've already built up your gig list with another band,.....

most of what we were doin was small bars and such so depending on the size of the band it would vary,....but normally 150 per man on any re-booking,....

OR if you know your gonna pull a bunch of people, playing for a percentage of the door,.....normally 75 to 80

also, if your of age, and your gonna be drinking, i'd ask or imply that there should be a band tab,.....its not often you can get liquior covered all night,....draft beer is normally covered,....or they'll give you a tab limit,...which is cool too

and if youre good, folks will bring you drinks, so sometimes thats not even an issue,...

i do, however, recomend explainin to everyone in the band that the bar tab should not come outa the gig pay, or it could get akward when one person drinks more than the other,.....and trust me, at the end of the night the last thign youre gonna wanna do is figure who drank what, and just take that money outa their share,......

naaaaaaaah, I'm solo and drunk right now. Just me and my acoustic guitar and some songs I wrote, I occasionally play in front of people, but no band sadly

GravitySlips 02-01-2008 06:52 AM

My band split up last week bcuz of various reasons. I was fed up with the music and we could never get time to practise, so me and the bassist just quit.

I'm gonna work my ass off on drums til summer and get back in the game.

I "rehearse" and record in my dorm room, and it doesn't cost me shit.

djchameleon 02-01-2008 04:42 PM

I pratice with my band every saturday right in the comfort of my own home......but then again the band I'm referring to is from the game "Rock Band"......my drummer is from florida and my bassist is from socal. My roommate is the vocalist and I'm the lead guitarist

NoiseNotMusic 02-01-2008 09:03 PM

write/record in my friends basement for free. DIY or DIE

mr. goth glam 02-01-2008 11:17 PM

As a comic, I will say that opening for bands is fun.

Especially when the already hammered crowd has no idea that a comic is going to proceed the music.

We have a recording studio that we practice in about twice a week. Right now, we're finishing up the mixing and mastering of our full length album, as well as writing new material. As for money, we don't get paid sh*t, all of our profits come from selling merch.

Low Void 10-12-2009 12:17 PM

Yea I play bass in a band and occasionally sing backing vocals too, but I usually leave that part to people who can actually sing ><". We're from Israel and we play locally only, doing cover versions of Audioslave, RATM, Muse, RHCP songs - stuff like that. There's this band rehearsal place that you can play in as much as you like for $4.5 per month, per person. Since I live in a VERY small town with VERY few people and nothing to do except for smoking pot and hanging out, most kids pick up an instrument and start a band, so you're lucky if you can schedual a rehearsal ><"

OceanAndSilence 10-12-2009 01:13 PM

was in two defunct bands from uni... now talking to two other bands that i might join... luckily i have my solo stuff to fall back on.

+81 10-12-2009 01:58 PM

I had to quit my band when I moved but I've got a few lines out there for some possible new ones. So at the moment no but chances are looking better.

kouki 10-12-2009 03:19 PM

I dont have a band,I play guitar tho and would love to meet people who play instruments in Phoenix AZ.

I release music indipendently but also have a little duo with a friend of mine. We practice at my house every now and then and have yet tro make a dime.

I've been in a band for a couple of years and we get gigs all over Melbourne but I am yet to make a dime as well... probably because we suck.

I don't mind not making money. I used to try and sell music as a career but I realised soon that when money gets involved creativity drops.

Jazzy stuff mostly. One day I'd like to make some rock music, but I've struggled to find a concept that really fits me.

tgpo 10-12-2009 05:29 PM

I play in our church's worship band every Sunday.

I also played in a hardcore punk band for about a year, but bowed out when my daughter was born due to lack of time, but can't wait to get back into a band again.

So true. And it becomes a chore and a job rather than a passion.

Dude the best music is the stuff you don't make just to sell. There are sure to be some people who will appreciate that and buy your stuff. I listened to a couple of your songs and they're really good :D

i was in a band in highschool never made it past the garage stage due to various reasons

VeggieLover 10-12-2009 10:27 PM

I was in a band for maybe...6 months? seems longer than that though it may have been less. We did covers of various artists in multiple genres. We ended up only writing...2 songs I guess, but we performed in quite a few different places, all local. Our instrumentalists were nothing super special, although we definitely had some talent...but we had two lead singers (me and my buddy :) ) which isn't very common. Not to toot my own horn, but id say we had some hot harmonies. It would be impossible to keep me off the stage, and i prefer duet type stuff to solos, so i want to get into another band asap!

Farfisa 10-13-2009 12:37 AM

I was in a band for two weeks haha, and that didn't go too well. I've been really ****ing around lately music wise, I'm a bit limited as to what I can achieve, due to less then stellar equipment. There's also the problem with focusing, I have trouble keeping with one thing for more then five minutes. I might not be cut out to be a musician... but I still love playing and listening to music.

Sounds similar to the band I'm in now. Lots of covers and lots of harmonies!

i play the bass in a pop punk/alternative band. i know that this type of music may be looked down on by some people here, but i enjoy it. we started in February and so far have played 9 shows in the Phlly area.

we've only gotten paid twice; first time was for 2 people who said there were there for us(some friends of ours ;) ) and the second time we got $100, even though it was pretty much our worst show, haha.

we do a few covers but most our stuff is original music, which is fine by me! :thumb:

Me and a couple of my friends are supposedly going to start a band, the one that plays drums is insane (at drums). I'd like to play shows but the drummer is in another band that he has put a lot of time into, althouugh he doesn't like the music they play all to much.

We're probably going to play some skacore/crack rock steady kind of stuff. Maybe some other kind of ska-punk.

Toughest part man is finding people to play with. They've always got conflicting ideas, some of them can't really play, it's a mess trying to find people.

If you find a good drummer, don't lose him! Them are the rarest of em all.
