Dark Side is fantastic, the vast array of sounds, the fascinating nature of the songs and the way they fit together. It took me two years to learn to distinguish the songs, except for Money of course. Plus it's mass appeal, it opened so many eyes to the previous genius of Floyd's music.

If we're speaking of metal, how can ANYONE stand to listen to the utter tripe that is dummy burger? I'm a huge black metal fan but I feel they demean the genre.

I am most definitely not a black metal fan but I can discern good from absolute tripe, and Dimmu Borgir is definitely among the latter.

Well, I'm not going to tell you In Rainbows is necessarily a progression from HTTT, Amnesiac, etc, but the reason I enjoyed In Rainbows to a point was because it felt like, I dunno, Thom Yorke had finally found his happy place or something. 15 Step and Bodysnatchers are both fairly upbeat, plus I personally feel the Weird Fishes/Arpeggi is just as high calibur as any of the supposed "favorites" from their past albums (Fake Plastic Trees, There There, Pyramid Song, etc).

IMO, you just need to forget everything they've done in the past when you listen to IR, and I swear you'll enjoy it a whole lot more. :)

Give it few more listens, maybe sometime when you're driving or when you're feeling kind of pissed off. There's nothing random about it, each song is like a precisely sharpened razorblade. If you can't hear the structure I'm talking about, at the very least try and give the drums a close listen. Dave Lombardo's playing is sick as hell on that album.

Okay, so it's the first thing that comes to mind when I saw the thread, can someone explain to me:

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

I've listened to it so many times (they even shot to number 4 on my last.fm charts) but I still find it grating. I can enjoy Sister a bit, but Daydream Nation just leaves me cold.

i agree 100%, but "There's Nothing Wrong With Love" is better than both of them.

I think Kid A is a beautiful album which involved taking a few risks but ultimately has some great tracks on it. Like dac said, each song seems to be quite intricate and layered. I really enjoy Kid A... but I have to admit I like OK Computer better.

Daydream Nation is more ambient than Sister, but what makes it better for me, is that the hooks placed in-between the noise are some of their best. 'Teenage Riot' is 'Baba O'Reilly' for the alternative generation, 'Total Trash' is one of the best riffs on the album, and for me, nothing is better than listening to it devolve over the course of seven minutes.

'Daydream Nation' is a riffy album, there are riffs I'd never noticed until over a year since I'd heard it, and from there they helped me appreciate it more. Take the riff during the breakdown on 'Hey Joni', it's fantastic, but I didn't notice it when I first picked it up.

You have to be in the right mood for Sonic Youth. What I find helps is putting albums on repeat when I go to bed, and when I wake up theres usually either some great part I never noticed stuck in my head, or this odd subconscious urge to listen to it more. I do this when I don't 'get' albums, and it works pretty well, usually on the more ambient stuff that I don't have the attention span to listen to straight through. Hope that helps.
