Stairway rip-off
What is the name of the song that Zeppelin ripped off to make Stairway to Heaven?
|
Spirit "Taurus"
|
What Zeppelin ripped music off someone? No way!.....
|
Thank you Crowquill, that's exactly the song.
|
Jesus, they did! I can't wait to shove it in my friends faces.
|
They sure did

I had a quick listen to that, and it sounded different enough to me. I don't care much for Zeppelin, and I don't know much about guitar, but they're different enough in my eyes in terms of the actual SOUND.
|
Holy ****, I just listened to that song
The guitar intro is identical to the Stairway intro *Looses all the respect she once had for Led Zeppelin* |
jesus christ people its only one song.....

Led Zeppelin's first two albums weren't even written by them, I think. Anyways I don't even like Stairway that much., I am into the stuff on their second album the most. IV wasn't really that good of an album.
|
It's no big deal
Oasis ripped off T-Rex's Get It On for Cigarettes & Alcohol The Jam ripped off The Supremes You Cant Hurry Love for Town Called Malice. It happens all the time. The only thing that bothers me about Led Zep's plagiarisms is all the old blues standards they called their own. Ripping off loads of blues artists who probably spent their entire careers not getting their due. |

The two songs sound different enough. Obviously the Zeppelin guitarist has been influenced by this song, but there's a unique enough take on it for me to give Zeppelin credit for it. |
How is it uniquer or any different? The songs themselves sure but the guitar parts could be the same song.
|
because it SOUNDS different, Crowquill. What should I say? The frequencies of sound are not exactly the same, and they are sufficiently dissimilar for me to still give Jimmy Page credit for Stairway to Heaven. Maybe he used this song as some sorta template. I have no problem with that, because I enjoy Stairway to Heaven despite how massively overhyped it is.
|
I honestly don't hear this supposed difference.

Besides nearly every artist rips off someone else. Spirit probably ripped that song off someone. |
By ripping off of course he means they asked some band to let them use a riff for a song even though it ended up being a different riff altogether.
Theres more to Stairway to Heaven than just the f*cking opening riff anyway. Quote:

Funny, all I wanted was the name of the song. I didn't realize that it would start this big argument. But since it did, I don't see any way anyone can say this isn't a total stealing of a song. As far as Zep taking those old blues songs, I am sure the old blues original writers were happy as can be about that. Doesn't 90% go to the writer? Bye the way, thank you crowquill for the answer. I have found you musical knowledge very helpful many times already.
|
Ok yes the two guitar lines do sound similar, but the Zeppelin one sounds better. :p:

I'm no fan boy, but those they stole from ought to thank them from taking them from the musical oblivion and at least installing them as a footnote to something relevent. |

If it wasn't for Zep hate, Spirit would be where exactly? Does anyone know any other song by them without googling it? Or having googled it in the past? How many Spirit albums do you own? I was verbally accosted by the same "did you know" rhetoric at the grocery store one time. And the know it all there had to let me know everything Zep did was stolen. This argument is officially on par with the tabloid news. |

Also, the lead guitarist from Spirit used to play guitar with Hendrix's first band. Their drummer has played with Taj Mahal, Rye Cooder and April Wine Their keyboard player was the keyboard player for Nazerath Their Bassist was Bass for Firefall and Heart And Jay Ferguson went on to have his own solo hit's I would rather go see a concert with all those groups than one with Led Zeppelin, The Honeydrippers, and The Firm any day. As a matter of fact, I would take Hendrix alone over Zeppelin. I might even choose Spirit and The Partridge Family over Pages sloppy old worn out stolen licks. |

Song rip-offs
I started a post asking what song Stairway to Heaven was coppied from. This seemed to lead into a discussion on other coppied songs. Let's see how many coppied songs we can name here. Put song clips if you have them.
I'll start off with one of my favorite songs, "Buffalo Soldier" by Bob Marley being coppied from "The Banana Splitz Theme". I read someone say that Bob must have been stoned one Saturday morning while little Ziggy was watching Saturday morning TV. Sounds right to me. YouTube - Banana Splits - The Ultimate Intro! YouTube - Buffalo soldier |
I've merged your two thread together because basically they're about the same subject.

I never said I hated Zep. I was really into them once apon a time ago. When I was a teenager my walls were covered with their posters. I still like many of their songs, just not all of them. Stairway to Heaven may have been the most overplayed record of my time. There used to be a commercial for WXRT in Chicago saying how they never overplayed records, at the end of the commercial they held up a pizza and said, this used to be Stairway to Heaven. After all is said and done, they still coppied that song from Spirit, the end.
