Van Morrison

My new selection for greatest ever; had the chance to dine with the man. His new album is inspiring. Anyone with any positive thoughts on Van the Man is invited and encouraged to share.

Be happy to share any of his music with fans or potential fans.

I own the entire catalog top to bottom.

Son of JayJamJah 03-03-2008 11:13 PM

Hello Crow

sleepy jack 03-03-2008 11:14 PM

YOU'RE ALIVE!?!?

Son of JayJamJah 03-03-2008 11:15 PM

I'm fine; just needed a break from the music banter world; I'm not a 15,000 post kinda guy. How have you been? Well I hope...?

sleepy jack 03-03-2008 11:18 PM

I've been okay, yourself?

savannah 03-03-2008 11:20 PM

i agree that van is the man,...
check out his stuff that he did with the band on the last waltz,.....
and into the mystic has got to me one of the greatest love songs ever

Son of JayJamJah 03-03-2008 11:23 PM

As I've mentioned before "Into the Mystic" was the song I first danced to with my wife after we were married.

And Crowquill I've been very well thank you. Strangely I've hit an age where Zeppelin is no longer the greatest ever. Van Morrison has taken the title.

sleepy jack 03-03-2008 11:25 PM

Good to see you've come to your senses (:

Son of JayJamJah 03-03-2008 11:29 PM

Good to see you haven't changed

I would love to hear St. Dominic's Preview or some stuff from Astral Weeks especially Sweet Thing

AnisMine 03-05-2008 01:07 PM

I have moondance on vinyl, but thats about it :( although I don't own much music anyways ;) I still always am lured to throw van on the tables, even in the middle of spinning through some hip hop. he just always can pop into anywhere, excited for that new cd!

jamerson macmanus 03-05-2008 08:43 PM

van morrison is a truely amazing talent. astral weeks, moondance, and saint dominics preview are my favorite records. and the live record it's too late to stop now is right up there for best live record of all time. theres only a handful of artists who are/were as versatile as van.

achoo 03-06-2008 09:15 AM

astral weeks is one of the most beautiful albums i've ever heard. i also love his band "Them." i'm not to big on his later stuff though.

His peak was certainly early; but really he was prolific and consistent (with a very few exceptions) for 15 years.Including the entire 1970's; From Astral Weeks to Common One is flawless save a slight post-Veedon Fleece Funk.

Even his stuff since the mid eighties while not at the same level as at worst tolerable and has an occasional gem like "Avalon Sunset" or "Days Like This"

What's unique about Morrison is his ability to make an entire album feel like one song.

Find me a Van album with one bad song or a few so-so's...you can't! You either dig the concept or not and if you do it's end to end.

You rarely experience a Morrison LP as a collection of songs so much an "experience"

There is no greater example then Astral Weeks; but St. Dominic's Preview, Veedon Fleece and Common One are comparable efforts with the same indistinguishable quality that makes it so captivating.

This is not to say there are not tracks that stand out, of course there are. But what's unique is that for each person it's a different set; For me; SDP, Into the Mystic, Sweet Thing, Bulbs and Wild Nights are tracks that transcend context.

Very excited for the next and 40th (I believe) album from Van the Man.

For a singer/songwriter from a prior decade to be above mediocre in the 80s is a pretty interesting feat when you think about it. Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Marianne Faithful all went to hell in the 80s. Luckily we had Mr. Waits to get us through so I think Van deserves props for not completely sucking it up.

jamerson macmanus 03-07-2008 02:51 AM

^^^ good call with tom waits in the 80's. him, elvis costello (for the most part), michael jackson, prince, and pixies saved that decade

Musicbanter's Top 100 Albums of the 80s

Oh yeah :pimp:

vanmorrisonnews 03-07-2008 08:14 PM

The stuff Van put out in the 80s is amongst the best stuff he ever did... just off the too of me head:

-Poetic Champions Compose (1987)
-No Guru, No Method, No Teacher (1986)
-Inarticulate Speech Of The Heart (1983)
-Beautiful vision (1982)
-Irish Heartbeat (1988)

All classics in my Van scorecard!
