Foreign Language Music...

Would you ever listen a song in a language that you didn't understand a single word?
I myself actually do, a like a few french and spanish songs and I don't know if Sigur Ros count...anw in this poll they do!

Gackt21 03-26-2008 09:46 AM

I do because I listen to Japanese artist like Gackt and Miyavi. I am starting to learn their language though so I know what they are singing about.

I already listen to some, mostly Spanish and Japanese I think. Oh, and some Italian.

chiron 03-26-2008 12:44 PM

Mekio Kaji, Tujiko Noriko, Alcest, Eisbrecher, Enslaved etc.

Comus 03-26-2008 12:51 PM

Being norwegian there's not many languages I don't understand that i would listen to however most black metal is impossibe to understand anywas.

califrikinrican 03-26-2008 02:06 PM

I listen to Korean, Japanese, Ukrainian, Icelandic, and Italian music (I understand about half the Italian though)

Seltzer 03-27-2008 03:01 AM

Most of the music with foreign lyrics that I listen to is indecipherable to anyone regardless of mother tongue. I have no problem with foreign lyrics... Bjork instantly comes to mind. Then of course, there's Magma who invented their own language.

pheurton 03-27-2008 04:26 AM

I guess I do with Devendra.

djchameleon 03-27-2008 05:33 AM

I do with Rammstein.....I heard one of their albums was the first full german albums to go platinum stateside

Farfisa 03-27-2008 06:50 AM

bjork and The Mars Volta comes to mind.

KENSOFINE 03-27-2008 07:40 AM

Beloslava. Iskam Teb is one of the hottest songs ever, and the only thing I know is that it means "I want you".

Also, Elis Regina has brilliant music.

Volta doesn't really count, only some of their lyrics are in spanish, however you could argue that the english they use is so mangled that it's a language in itself.

Cesaria Evora, Sigur Ros, Manu Chao, Malajube...not much. I'm not sure if the sparsity of quality acts in languages other than English is the result of lack of exposure or if there really aren't that many quality bands out there that don't fall under the "World music" label...

I've downloaded some Mexican indie pop yesterday, I'll give it a go...:\

One i really like is Outlandish

Frewen 03-30-2008 11:34 PM

Yep, apart from all the metal in various Scandinavian languages, Boris and TTC come to mind.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 03-30-2008 11:47 PM

I listen to a decent amount of French and Japanese bands, a band who sings in Spanish and one in Russian. I'm pretty sure all the Scandinavian music I have, the lyrics are English.

spark10036 03-31-2008 01:40 PM

anybody listens to any greek artists?
I would recommend alkinoos ioannidis, christos thivaios, trypes, diafana krina and endelexeia.
look them up in youtube.greek rock is actually pretty unique in a very strange way.

icebox 04-01-2008 07:34 AM

i like Korean, Japanese and Filipino songs. they're full of feelings =)

infusician 04-02-2008 03:15 PM

I listen to French and Chinese since I'm learning both languages. Have you noticed that it's so much easier to sing in a foreign language than to speak it? Weird...

Davey Moore 04-02-2008 03:16 PM

Does classical music count?

spark10036 04-02-2008 04:43 PM

I find it that you dodn't need to understant something to sing it

I'm doing it right now as I type this post. My favorite band (Oomph) is German.

You can't even understand lyrics in English half of the time. Listen to rap, listen to death metal, WTF are they saying?

sleepy jack 04-06-2008 03:13 AM

I was about to reply to this thread saying I don't but then thinking about it I listen to alot. Aside from the obvious Sigur Ros/Devendra Banhart I also like: Amanda Woodward, La Quiete, Belle Epoque, Raein, Daitro, Louise Cyphre, etc.

Greta 04-06-2008 01:09 PM

Most of the foreign language(well i won't talk about american or english bands, although they sing in foreign language to me) bands i like are from German: Revolverheld, Oomph and Killerpilze.

Big surprise! I wouldn't have guessed you liked them.
