Who is the best artist right now?
 

I really want to know who people feel is the best new artist around RIGHT NOW. Nothing earlier.

as in, best band who just debuted? in that case, i'll go with grand archives

yeah recently debuted and in recently i mean in like 1-2 years.

well, in that case, i change my answer to band of horses.

Band of Horses debuted back in 05. Anyway my favorite bands of 08 are probably Grand Archives, She & Him, Fleet Foxes and A Weather.

their debut lp came out in 06. i didn't even know that ep existed till just now. fuckin douche.

Yeasayer are pretty good...Justice, Simian Mobile Disco....um...that's about it I think...*fail*

Um, Vampire Weekend maybe, but the Black kids? Not so much. I'll wait for the album to make a final decision though...:|

There was an article in SPIN about all these new hype bands it was coupled with an interview with Vampire Weekend I can scan it if anyone wants.

Dodos are the best band to debut in 2008 by a walk.

by the way they're both playing lollapalooza for those of you chicagoins.

It's way better than Atlas Sound. It's full of great melodies and the acoustic/rhythmic elements I find really interesting. And it's pretty great considering the whole thing was done purely from an acoustic guitar/drums set up. Actually I would have thought you might quite like it :)

I gave it another listen and admit that I exaggerated a bit. It does have some good tunes, but overall it didn't catch my attention. It's like Tilly and the wall only without the crazy fun and catchyness...:\

They only have like 3 songs up on their myspace but dang, they sound great.

I'd like to second , third or was it fourth Holy Fuck.

Also CSS are the best pop band i've heard in years.

I mean people can mention earlier musicians like lets say Robert Plant who are still active in recording, not just new artists.

Their remix of Radiohead's Nude is very nice.

I ****ing love the Silents and Henry's Phonograph, but then I am rooted in psychedelic and post-punk popcraft. The former have just released their debut in Oz and are signed to the rather excellent Ivy League records. And no I don't work for them.

Otherwise Durrty Goodz from the UK. To be honest the only music 'scene' I follow rabidly is grime, but there's a general consensus that Goodz has and will far surpass that.

I don't like much that's come out recently, but I do like Paramore and Flyleaf..

Actually, I really like Ghillie Dhou (there's a song available on myspace.com/mypollux)... it's French, but she does a pretty good cover of Black Hold Sun
