"Big City Nights"

The Scorpions (Original):

Fozzy (cover):

Fozzy's cover is better.

edit: links work, my youtube tags are probably wrong?

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-25-2008 11:05 AM

I fixed them for you.

You don't need to put the whole address in youtube tags , only the video code.

sweet_nothing 04-25-2008 02:56 PM

the beatles- i am the walrus

oasis- i am the walrus

i have to say i love oasis' cover better than the original, i know i'm crazy.

Piss Me Off 04-25-2008 03:02 PM

Me too actually, Liam's drunken drawl adds something to it.

Predator 04-25-2008 03:24 PM

Original.

I think DLR stayed true to the original. The only real change is bringing the song up to 80's rock spec. Depending on my mood, I like both.

Predator 04-25-2008 03:32 PM

Original

Cover

It wasn't the best song in the first place, but at least the original was original and fun. Krokus put a glam spin on it and made is one of the worst songs ever.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-25-2008 03:35 PM

^^

The Damned's version of this is awesome

And the man in the back said everyone attack
And it turned into a ballroom blitz
And the girl in the corner said boy I want to warn you
She's got great big tits
Great big tits
Great big tits

:D

I can't find that one on youtube. I found part of it, and I'm guessing its more of a punk version?

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-25-2008 03:43 PM

Yeah it is

And Lemmy played Bass on it too.
It was released as Motordamned.

I think Tesla tried to make the song theirs, but failed. They tried to make a statement that was from a time that had passed. The original is my pick.

sweet_nothing 04-25-2008 04:33 PM

dead souls- Joy Division

dead souls- nine inch nails

I'm a Motley Crue fan, but I don't think they did this song justice. When I hear the Brownsville Station version, I can actually imagine smokin (or tokin) in the school bathroom. The Motley Crue version just makes me imagine thinking about it without the balls to actually do it.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-25-2008 04:40 PM

This one has always stumped me as I could never actually remember whose was the cover & whose was the original.

I know it's a Mary Chain song now.

Don't ask me which I like better.

Predator 04-25-2008 05:05 PM

I love this song, both versions.

I refuse to choose between the two. Queen made an awesome song and NIN made an awesome cover.

Predator 04-25-2008 06:28 PM

Another one that I can't decide on. I have no idea why I like Metallica punk covers as much as I do, but...

boo boo 04-25-2008 07:01 PM

Yeah, I really hated that Oasis cover of I Am the Walrus.

Thats my problem with Oasis, they're really more of a disgrace to The Beatles than a tribute, they just water everything down.

sweet_nothing 04-25-2008 07:02 PM

yeh sure.....

jackhammer 04-25-2008 07:18 PM

Al Green (seriously underated vocalist):

Talking Heads Cover:

TH is musically more involving but vocally miles behind.

mr. goth glam 04-25-2008 09:13 PM

Another one I thought of is Marilyn Manson's cover of "Down in the park."

Definitely hunt that down, if you can (I would, but crappy dial-up and YouTube do not go together very well).

Predator 04-25-2008 09:20 PM

After "And Justice For All", the only album I can respect that was released by Metallica is "Garage Inc". The entire album was covers from their history. Of course the album was released to make money, but it also showed where most bands make their start. I'm not sure I could find a band that never played music from another band. That said, I am going to list every song on Garage Inc. with both versions. Original on the left, and Metallica on the right.

Disk 1

Discharge:Free speech for the dumb.

Diamond Head: It's Electric

Black Sabbath: Sabbra Cadabra

Bob Seger: Turn The Page

Misfits: Die, Die my darling

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Loverman

Mercyful Fate/King Diamond: Satan's Fall / Curse Of The Pharaohs / A Corpse Without Soul / Into The Coven / Evil
Since it is a mix of a few songs, Its going to be a bit harder to do this one and I'll link it later.

Blue Oyster Cult: Astronomy

Thin Lizzy: Whiskey In The Jar

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Tuesday's Gone

Discharge: The More I See

Disk 2

Diamond Head: Helpless

Holocaust: The Small Hours

Killing Joke: The Wait

Budgie: Crash Course In Brain Surgery (Sorry, I couldn't find a decent Metallica version.)

Misfits: Last Caress / Green Hell
Misfits is individual songs. Metallica side is both songs.

Metallica side is green hell only

Diamond Head: Am I Evil

Blitzkrieg: Blitzkrieg

Budgie: Breadfan

Diamond Head: The Prince

Queen: Stone Cold Crazy

Anti-Nowhere League: So What?

Sweet Savage: Killing Time

Motörhead: Overkill

Motörhead: Damage Case

Motörhead: Stone Dead Forever

Motörhead: Too Late Too Late

I think that for the most part, Metallica did an awesome job covering these songs. Most were done justice, but, some are crap.
I don't expect anyone to watch every video, but it might be worth your time to listen to a few of them.

I hope at least one member of Music Banter (besides me) enjoys the effort I put into this. Thanks

sweet_nothing 04-26-2008 01:16 AM

wow....

mr dave 04-26-2008 08:35 AM

james hetfield's butthole just called. you missed a spot near the left butt cheek in your recent lick-fest.

Heavy flow this month?

Why Atreyu should be legally forbidden from performing covers.

Faith No More: Epic

That was awful. I wonder if Atreyu thought it sounded good.

Bon Jovi: You Give Love A Bad Name

It was bad enough by Bon Jovi, then Atreyu came up with the great idea of covering it.

I think Atreyu should stick to making their own shitty songs. Stop fucking up other peoples music.

sweet_nothing 04-26-2008 11:15 PM

Atreyu is such a horrid hot topic band.

Predator 04-26-2008 11:39 PM

Bohemian Rhapsody.

Queen

Montserrat Caballe and Bruce Dickinson

I really have nothing to say about this one. Its a matter of watching it yourself and making an opinion.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-28-2008 11:32 AM

I've heard that Prince has covered Radiohead's Creep

I NEED TO HEAR THIS

Piss Me Off 04-28-2008 11:38 AM

Wow...I really do appreciate the effort you put into this! I only listened to "Am I Evil" and "Breadfan", since those are two of my faves. Metallica did a great job on both covers, thought I must say I really liked Diamond Head's version of "Am I Evil". I could take or leave the original version of "Breadfan" though. Thanks for posting those!

Whatsitoosit 05-06-2008 09:35 AM

"Live and let die" by GNR is the best cover I've ever heard and I prefer it to the original by Wings.
Why? because GNR made the song feel like it should sound... the subject matter is very cold/harsh, I just felt Wings didn't convey that message of "screw everybody else, worry about yourself" as well as GNR did.

My second fav is "Nobody does it better" played live by Radio head, I do like the original by Carly Simon but the Radio Head one is very well done and gives it some well needed balls. I liked the arrangement done by Radio Head, it makes me want to listen to the original again without feeling the original was better... they kind of stand up as good versions on their own.

Other then that I generally feel covers fall short of the original and rather just listen to the original.

simplephysics 05-11-2008 01:34 PM

The Beatles -Across The Universe

Rufus Wainwright's version

Fiona Apple's

I actually like both of these covers, mainly because neither of them screwed with the song dynamics very much. I like Fiona's version better, Wainwright seems a little bored in his.

jibber 05-11-2008 09:13 PM

Paint it black: original

The Unseen:

****. they tried to do what ALOT of other bands have done before them, in their whiny annoying screamy style, and it's ****.

Judas Priest:

not exactly to my taste, and I most certainly like the original better. But of all the covers, this one is up there with some of the best that have actually been able to mould the song into one of their own. Definitely in keeping with their style, so even though I'm not a huge fan, I like it because they were able to make a good song without butchering the original by doing a strict copy.

if anyone can find a copy of duran duran's cover, post it up. it's amusing.
