Best Artist: Round 2: Poll K

Polls open for two days, only 17 polls this time around, vote for your favorite etc etc etc.

I vote for Nick Cave.

Wayfarer 05-08-2008 05:24 PM

I hate you. :(

Have to go with TMV, I guess.

...:(

jackhammer 05-08-2008 05:41 PM

Nope...all five again.

Alfred 05-08-2008 07:32 PM

Mars Volta because of their affiliation with At The Drive In. Don't like the music so much, but I haven't listened to most of the other ones.

Seltzer 05-08-2008 07:46 PM

Mars Volta I suppose.

boo boo 05-08-2008 07:53 PM

Yet another poll where everything is win.

Gotta go with Bjork though.

Inuzuka Skysword 05-08-2008 08:25 PM

Something tells me Godspeed has no chance of winning so I won't vote for them. I don't think Bjork will win either so there is no reason to vote for them. TMV are my least favorite out of the next three so I am limited to Husker DU and Nick Cave.

Husker Du.

simplephysics 05-08-2008 08:27 PM

Hard choice between Mars Volta and Nick Cave...

Mars Volta.

ProggyMan 05-08-2008 09:26 PM

Wow, the second round is really hard so far. Mars Volta.

Laces Out Dan! 05-08-2008 10:59 PM

The Volta.

Lizzie 05-08-2008 11:12 PM

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, easily

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 05-09-2008 12:18 AM

godspeed

Zer0 05-09-2008 03:05 AM

Godspeed You! Black Emperor :)

SubPop 05-09-2008 03:49 AM

wow nice group of bands there, I will go for Husker Du

The Unfan 05-09-2008 04:20 AM

Godspeed.

The collective whole of Musicbanter is deaf. TMV? Really?

boo boo 05-09-2008 11:10 AM

They would have been my second choice.

Jonovision 05-09-2008 11:53 AM

husker du.....but i've never heard nick cave...

Piss Me Off 05-09-2008 01:03 PM

My beloved Bjorky.

boo boo 05-09-2008 01:06 PM

I love Bjork, TMV and Godspeed, but I like Cave and Husker Du too.

I like Husker Du the least though, I think they are a bit overrated. New Day Rising is a solid album though, I know some people prefer Zen Arcade but I really don't know why. Theres melody in the former, the latter is mostly noise.

GravitySlips 05-09-2008 01:50 PM

All good bands except TMV, but Husker Du are just, better.

Thats the appeal.

boo boo 05-09-2008 03:34 PM

Whatever. Not my thing.

TMV get a lot of unfair flack, so I'm glad they're winning this.

But Bjork in last? :(

Farfisa 05-10-2008 12:07 AM

I loved Nick's work with The Bithday Party....and I loved Dig,Lazuras,Dig

GravitySlips 05-10-2008 05:15 PM

I'm surprised you like The Mars Volta, boo boo. Most "prog" fans seem to hold that band in some disdain, along with the rest of us sensible folks. Surprising indeed. They are terrible, with the exception of their first album which had some promising moments...that one is merely bad, not terrible.

And they wonder why I'm always ranting about Indie fans when there are guys like you around who do nothing but confirm all the negative stereotypes I associate with Indie fans.

The Mars Volta actually have a reasonable following from prog fans, that I can tell you. Also you're just wrong. The Mars Volta are an excellent band, not just because they are great musicians but they're making challenging music that certainly hasn't been done before, and Indie fans are always raving about music thats "new and fresh" so I don't f*cking get why Indie fans hate them so much, hmm.... I have a guess though, its because they're actually good.

I could sit and hammer my wall with a mallet, and program a drum beat over it. That could be challenging music that hasn't been done before. Doesn't make it good. The Mars Volta may be good musicians, but compositionally they fall drastically short, and more and more so with each release. Absolutely, their last album is one of the most meandering pieces of garbage I have ever heard. Completely devoid of direction. I tried to like them, I really did. I mean I love, I mean LOVE, At the Drive In, so it's not any sort of problem with the band members themselves. It just saddens me to see such talent go to waste, even if it is "original" waste.

This conception you have of "indie fans" exists only inside your own head, by the way. Your obsession with it is one of the most ridiculous things on this site, to the point where it's embarassing. Just accept that people have different opinions and tastes in music, and not everyone wants to hear 15 minutes of garbage meandering when they're listening to music. Some of us would rather listen to Death Cab for Cutie, some of us would rather listen to Led Zeppelin, some of us would rather listen to Merzbow. Everyone believes they're listening to the best **** ever, not just "indie kids". So stop this useless spiel about "indie fans" because it's utter garbage.

Incidentally, most fans of The Mars Volta I know are exactly what you seem to portray as "indie kids". Most Mars Volta fans where I'm from are your stereotypical indie kids, which is not really a bad thing unless you have deluded yourself into believing a pile of nonsense ;)

Or its just because its not repetitive enough for your attention span. I really don't care, but you were being a jerk about it.

If you actually undertood the direction they were taking, and have listened to a lot of prog, especially the more avant garde stuff like Henry Cow, then I don't see what makes The Mars Volta so inaccessible by comparison. Hell, I find there to be a lot more sturcture in De-Loused then say Tago Mago by Can.

Known in some Indie circles as "The only good prog band"

As many times as I've heard this, I've never heard a good example of why I'm wrong about my generalizations.

Indie fans are very predictable.

I'm not talking about all scenesters, just a specific breed. I dub them Pitchforkians.

Piss Me Off 05-13-2008 08:37 AM

I thought MV were popular with the Pitchfork lot?

ProggyMan 05-13-2008 09:23 AM

Uh, have you seen their review from Pitchfork?

Piss Me Off 05-13-2008 09:25 AM

I'll go look now, their reviews are always a cheap laugh.

Edit: That wasn't funny! I am disappointed in Pitchfork! Annoyingly i haven't heard their latest album, but i'm sure its far better than Battles' album.

boo boo 05-13-2008 12:50 PM

Their review of Frances was just bad. The majority of the review wasn't even discribing the album. Hell they were so lazy they didn't even try to elaborate on why it got such a low rating.

And thats why i despise Pitchfork. It promotes SOME good music but their reviews are useless to me.

Kudos on the album in your sig by the way, i'm listening to it a lot too.

ProggyMan 05-13-2008 09:20 PM

Pitchfork review:
Pointless psuedo-intellectual intro. Ridiculous comment on music. Stupid generilization about band's fans. Repeat 5 times.

Comus 05-14-2008 02:58 AM

something awful did the bes tmv review ever with amp.

You know, I do like a lot of prog. I would completely agree with you in that bands like King Crimson and Can and Henry Cow are far, far better than run-of-the-mill stuff like Modest Mouse and Okkervil River and Vampire Weekend and bands of that ilk. I just find TMV, specifically their last album, to be absolutely awful. As a big ATDI fan, TMV are disappointing to me. It's just the way it is...other people might, and clearly do, feel differently. Good.

I really do like prog music, admittedly in fairly small doses, but I appreciate it's artistic merit. King Crimson and Can are high on my list of favourite bands and they are the prog bands I continually go back to. To be honest, I don't think our tastes in music are too different, boo boo. I don't want to continue arguing this, as like most arguments it's a trivial matter. I accept that you, and others, like TMV and I respect that you enjoy their music. It's just not for me.
