Contracts

Hi:

I'm a songwriter but I do not sing myself. I recently had an issue with a singer because I didn't have contracts in place from the beginning.

I need help. Can anyone tell me where to find simple music contracts, either on line, at a bookstore, or company I can order them from. I cannot afford an attorney at this time so I'm looking for simple alternatives. I need distribution and work-for-hire contracts; something where I can fill in the blanks.

Thank y'all so much. ~Warmest

you can always try finding a college / university text book about contract negotiations. they should have sample contract examples within the text. try to find something relating to entertainment laws and contracts.

amazon.com has tons of books regarding entertainment laws amazon.ca - Any Category > Books > Law > Business > Entertainment

keep in mind you can write the contract yourself. just be aware of your particular state or provinces policies and regulations to make them legally binding. it might be as simple as having them notarized once they're signed. although i'd recommend just paying a lawyer for 1-2 hours of work to proofread it and discuss the details.

don't take this the wrong way but if you're getting in the position where you're dealing with people who normally have contracts on a regular basis i'd STRONGLY recommend developing a working relationship with an entertainment lawyer, or backing off from that level of the industry.
