Expand my Prog Repertoire!

I need some help finding some new progressive bands/artists to listen to. I've been really getting into this genre lately - bands like Porcupine Tree, Tool, Dream Theater, Opeth, 3, The Mars Volta, Coheed and Cambria, Spock's Beard, Liquid Tension Experiment, At the Drive In, Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, etc. With Nick Drake and Pink Floyd as the exception, I seem to like new prog - older bands don't do much for me. I often find them too self indulgent or bland.

Can anybody suggest some bands (new or old, but they must be good!) that I'd like? Thanks in advance.

Sieges Even
Riverside
Pure Reason Revolution

all top bands.

You should try Pain of Salvation as well!
They are one of my favorite in terms of modern prog.
Also, give Evergrey & Anathema a go. More or less similar to the bands you have mentioned.
Other than that, the ones above are top recs.

Pain Of Salvation? never heard of them. I may check them out myself.

Well, these guys are the masters in terms of expressing emotions through 'Progressive metal'.(which is the last thing I'd expect from the genre)
Their music is centered more around the vocals. But the instrumentation is done quite well, without going overboard at all!(btw, i think they have one of the best vocalist)
Actually, the way they go about is kinda complex, but try giving 'The perfect element 1' a go. If you do like it by any chance, check out 'Remedy Lane' then.
All are concept albums and checking out the lyrics is a must!(well, not a must...but it's one of their plus points and the whole concept thingy is lost without it)
Each track adds to the experience...so listening to the entire album is kinda a prerequisite

To the prog guy: Youve heard of Symphony X, right?

I would be interested in both,I have napster to go that's how I check out most of my music before I buy it.

I used to be big on Pain of Salvation when I listened to that kinda stuff. Check out the album "Be" if you're gonna try them out. By far the best album.

I need some good thrash metal. I'm listening to Anthrax at the moment, and I enjoy the odd Metallica tune, and I have some Megadeth, but nothing I find very thrashy.

Jackhammer is probably the resident metal genius. You should bump his thread so he starts working on it again. ;)
