Default modern music?

Somebody help! I'm looking for contemporary music that's similar to one or more of the following:

Brian Eno's early solo work
Early Roxy Music
Talking Heads (yes, particularly that done with Eno)

The issue I have is finding music that is modern. Even though I'm 21, I usually find myself returning to the same time period in music. I can't find anything new that appeals to me, but maybe I'm not looking in the right places. Ideas?

John Spencer Blues Explosion, Black Diamond Heavies, Left Lane Cruiser, Honkeyfinger, (maybe possibly) Tom Waits, The Immortal Lee County Killers.

Or just google it. Anyway, I highly suggest all of those for punk/blues hybrids, but some of them are pretty... odd, to say the least.

I have a rather unusual (I think) question, in that most of my life I've been mostly isolated from any music made later than 1960 (parents wouldn't allow that 'evil modern junk'). Well it's some years later and I'm finding random songs I like, but my collection of music I really like a lot is very small. But I also haven't tried a whole lot of music.

I have strangely selective/varied tastes I think, and am pretty much uneducated as to what other peoples opinion is of the music I listen to. For all I know the music I listen to could be considered the most girly or stupid stuff in the world. Quite frankly I don't care because it's my own personal listening anyway

As to tastes, if I go to grooveshark.com and play the top 100 popular songs, chances are I'll find maybe 1 or 2 I actually like a lot if I'm lucky.

So, here are a few types of songs whose styles I find really interesting.

Viva La Vida - Coldplay
Lovestoned - Justin Timberlake
Calling - Geri Halliwell
Africa - Toto
For You - Coldplay
Ecstasy - Andre Tanneberger
Preparedness - The Bird And The Bee
Reptillia - The Strokes

Based on these, would you have any recommendations / suggestions of songs or bands I should try?

I'd like some slightly-obscure albums from the pre-2000's. There's no real reason for asking, but I always seem to get the same few answers when I ask for album recommendations. For an example of what I mean, think pre-"(Don't Fear) The Reaper" Blue Oyster Cult or something. Something good, just not really really popular. I'd like to expand my tastes more.

Lycia - A Day In the Stark Corner
Bim Sherman - What Happened
Fluke - Risotto
The Delgados - Peloton
Elysian Fields - Bleed Your Cedar

^ Should be a nice variation of sounds for you to test drive there, if you don't have them already of course...

This is going to sound weird because I'm looking for music I've probably already heard of but here goes...

Does anyone have any suggestions on good 70s pop rock? After somehow missing the boat on them my entire life, I've really been digging late 70s-era Fleetwood Mac for the past year and would love to check out some other similar music. Does anyone have any suggestions?
