any other indie albums I should check out?

i'm looking at stuff like Slowdive's Souvlaki. Medicine's Shot-Forth Self Living and Bark Psychosis' Hex, all of which I adore

Have you ever heard of or checked out SIANspheric? Same vein as Slowdive and Medicine. I'd start with the 'There's Always Someplace You'd Rather Be'. Though all 3 of their full lengths are fantastic.

I need some kind of acoustic guitar shredding and virtuosics.

Like Nick Drake, not that he shreds, just the finger picking and unorthodox style.

I'm still mourning the death of R.E.M and am reasonably depressed at the fact that I never got to see them live. Is there a similar band that has the same style of melodic amazingness and interesting lyrics that haven't yet split up? xD

I have a noticeable absence of bands from Australia and New Zealand in my collection. Any bands I should really check out? Something along the lines of The Church would be cool.

The Triffids were pretty wonderful.

Ahh, I don't really know if they're similar, but I know REM has influenced The Decemberists, and Colin Meloy is a master of melody and storytelling.
