Great thread, I've agreed with everything so far. I'll be impressed if he can take this all the way to #1.

So I kinda disagree with the grunge one, though it's true that grunge was mostly corporate hype, I still like the bands.

And enough of the Smashing Pumpkins hate. :(

In terms of the Pumpkins, i like the music but hate the band. I'd be intrigued to see if Billy Corgan can get any further up his own arse in the next few years.

I totally agree with the grunge one. Like anything there was the occasional good grunge song but basically I hated that stuff when it was new and I continue to hate it to this day.

Well Pumpkins are still one of my favorite bands, at least in the top 10 region for me.

I understand why people hate them though, they use the alternative label but they don't sound like an alternative band, alternative is supposed to be all about lo-fi production and miminalism, SP were the exact opposite, their songs were all layered and pure pomp. They had more in common with 70s arena rock bands like Queen and Rush than they ever did with Big Black or Dinosaur Jr.

And thats precisely the reason I love them, they brought back the pomp rock, not even todays prog bands do it quite like the Pumpkins did.

I think the bands decline started with Adore when they adopted an industrial rock sound, which is pretty much what f*cking everybody was doing in 1998.

As for grunge, it depends, I still love Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and The Melvins are pretty awesome. I don't care for Alice in Chains or Soundgarden though, but I admire their talent.

I'm pretty sure Urban actually likes Siamese Dream but I'd like to repeat that this thread rules.

There have been a few notable cases where grunge and alternative artists elevated themselves from the mainstream bull**** and became a defining pinnacle. Radiohead comes to mind, as well as Blind Melon (mostly because Shannon Hoon was amazing). Actually, I'm getting kinda tired of this blanket "alternative" label that people (I scarcely know who) have been putting on rock music. What will they call it when someone refuses to accept that label? Alternative-alternative rock?

I think alt rock purists and hipsters hate so called alternative bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Blind Melon for their classic rock influences more than anything, which is supposed to be like treason or something. Granted there are bands like Dinosaur Jr but they have that sh*tty "we just recorded this album in our garage" production that makes them cool and acceptible.

Its all about that so called bullsh*t "authenticity", so I think what Urban said about punk fans applies to indie fans as well, for the most part.

Just look at Pavement, as soon as they learned how to actually play their instruments and record an album that dosen't sound like it was pieced together in 5 minutes in some outhouse they "sold out".

It just seems like this woman was put on this planet to annoy me. Whether it's pissing over her husbands legacy of recording some of the finest heaviest music to basically turn him into a doddering slurring imbecile for the cameras for another few million quid in their horrible obviously scripted 'reality' show.

Or maybe it's getting herself or her pug ugly talentless kids on TV doing all the things that spoilt rich celebrity brats do , music & TV presenting or whatever they feel like being that week.

Her position as a talent show judge is hilarious as it's quite clear that this woman couldn't recognise talent if it jumped up & bit her on the arse. Let's look at her management record before she started doing these talent shows. There was Ozzy , who she only managed because she wanted to take Sabbath off her father to piss him off until Tony Iommi told her to take a running jump.
The Smashing Pumpkins , a band who had been around approx a decade already , and they only stuck around for a year or so. The rest were a few here today gone tomorrow unimportant metal bands. Hardly a track record for discovering new talent.

And then there's her treatment of other bands when they dare criticise her. When Josh Homme complained about his treatment on the Ozzfest Sharon said she hoped his dick would fall off so him mother could eat it. When Bruce Dickinson did the same thing they sabotaged Iron Maidens set. When Lee Kerslake & Bob Daisley asked where their royalties for the first 2 Ozzy albums were she got the albums re-recorded so she didn't have to pay them anything. There's also a story going around that when Randy Rhodes handed in his notice she told him that 'She'd make sure he'd never work in the music industry again'.

Basically I fucking hate this woman and her fucking awful 'i'm just a regular mum' type Asda adverts were the last straw.
Sharon Osbourne , Rot in hell.

All I can say to that is...

THANK YOU!

Oh and you left out one of the worst things she did, starting Ozzfest, which showcases lame nu metal bands more than anything. This woman's contribution to music was basically introducing us to Limp Bizkit.
