39 : Electronic Music Sub Genres

Now metal takes a lot of stick for having a ridiculous amount of stupid sub genres but I've always thought that at least the names they give them are pretty self explanatory. Or it could be i'm more familiar with metal , I don't know. I suspect the answer is probably a combination of the two.

On the other hand I just look at the amount of sub genres in electronic music and I am just baffled by it. I have absolutly no idea what most of them mean. As far as I am concerned there are only really 3 worth bothering with and here is my interpretation of them...

Trance - Boring floaty stuff
House - Uptempo dancy stuff
Experimental - BBC sound effects album

That's not to say I wouldn't listen to anything else as I regually listen to a lot of electronic music from time to time I just take it as I hear it and ignore all the stupid sub genres it may be listed under. I have no idea what Illbient , Nortec , Ghettotech , Glitch , Dirty electronic , Jumpstyle , Chemical breaks or Darkcore are, and quite honestly I couldn't care less either.

Yup. Just as many sub genres as Metal and most are just there for the sake of it. Some are fairly easy to relate to though.

House music has elements of Disco, Funk and Soul and Trance is more about the BPM and the obligatory Ambient breakdown and Experimental is a ridiculously huge umbrella. Beats and Breaks in it's simplest form could pertain to early Chem Bros, but it is a fairly tenuous link.

Glitch is the one that has always fascinated me. What is it?

Here we are

Quote:
Glitch is a term used to describe a genre of experimental electronic music that emerged in the mid to late 1990s. The origins of the glitch aesthetic can be traced back to Luigi Russolo's Futurist manifesto The Art of Noises. In a Computer Music Journal article published in 2000, composer and writer Kim Cascone coined the term post digital to describe various experimentations associated with the glitch aesthetic. Glitch is characterized by a preoccupation with the sonic artifacts that can result from malfunctioning digital technology, such as those produced by bugs, crashes, system errors, hardware noise, CD skipping, and digital distortion.[2] Cascone considers glitch to be a sub-genre of electronica.

38 : T'Pau
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh the first band I ever truly hated.
I get all nostalgic at the thought of punching Carol Decker's face in.

Happy days

I think Venetian Snares could be classified as a very tame sort of Glitch at it's most experimental, maybe. A mate of mine listens to some Glitch stuff, mental taste in music.

37 : Touring Musicians

Imagine how depressing it must be to be a touring musician. There you are playing to thousands of people in massive arenas & stadiums for , say Morrissey for example. and not one person in that crowd has any idea of who the hell you are. Worse still if you're his guitarist everybody in that arena is looking at you wishing you were Johnny Marr as you try your best to make all the Smiths songs in the set sound as convincing as possible.

But it gets worse than that. Imagine it's the tail end of the 70s and your Bowie's guitarist you've just finished a successful tour and Bowie is about to record a new album , you get all excited at the thought of playing on a Bowie record only to discover that you've been dropped like a bad habit because David got in his mate Robert Fripp to do all the guitars on the album instead of you. But hey never mind , at least you get to play all Fripp's stuff on the next tour. You could go out and record an album of your own during the meantime but you know full well that those millions of people you played to on that last tour don't give a flying fuck about your own material and won't buy it.

Touring musicians , don't get me wrong I don't hate them but you have to admit it is a rather pathetic existence and is probably the worst case of selling your soul. I recently was channel surfing the other day and saw Cliff Richard playing his new single. The bassist looked about 20 years old and didn't stop smiling the whole time , and I just thought to myself 'Fuck , imagine how much stick he's going to get from his mates for that' , especially if they're all in trendy indie bands'. I mean if you love music enough to want to learn an instrument why the hell would you want to be in Cliff Richard's band at that young age?
I just don't get it. I'd rather be broke playing my own stuff at that age than play songs for a God botherer whose nearly in his 70s
