I just recently started listening to the Smiths, downloaded a couple of their albums. Not really my cup of tea at the moment but with more listens... who knows.

I still think Muse is one of the better mainstream acts today (at least in the UK). :thumb:

You know somewhere at Pitchfork I think there are a couple of journos pissing themselves laughing.

We all know the indie hipster thing to do is to pretend you don't read it even though you blatantly do. And I think this was in their minds when they did this.

Basically they took some average unspectacular run of the mill mid 90s indie album , hyped it to fuck and sat back and watch as every indie kid on every music forum suddenly announced it's classic status.
You think i'm making this up? nobody gave a shit about this album before 2005. I saw a few people who were into this stuff saying good things about it but at least they were praising it in context , saying it was good for what it was. Not saying stuff like it being the 4th best album of the 90s (s******).

So if there are any Indie kids reading this thinking i'm talking out of my arse , first of all I don't care your not going to convince me this was ever thought of as a classic pre-2005 no matter how hard you try. Secondly if there are any other average unspectacular run of the mill mid 90s indie albums you have in mind for the 5th best album of the 90s let us know them now before Pitchfork gets there seeing as you have all this pre-knowledge of what's going to be hyped to fuck. As opposed to telling us after that you always thought it was good and Pitchfork hyping the crap out of it just moments before you saying that just happened to be one big coincidence.

The uber-fans i've talked to tended to make me feel a bit alienated to be honest because i just can't bring myself to call him a full blown genius or god's gift to music or whatever. My favourite artist yes, but he's far from a role model. To be honest i'm never going to want to shag him, i'm never going to excuse his dodgy tirades and i'm never going to be interested in in what shirts he wears.
I will nick as many rarities as i can but i really can't be arsed to pretend to be Kenneth Williams. I'm not that insane yet.

I've always assumed it's something like the Sugarape office. I'm still not massively sure whether they're massive jokers or genuine idiots.

Apart from The Queen Is Dead, I don't really understand the hype. Their other stuff is decent (ok, maybe even good), but their reputation of the best 80's band is pretty iffy.

Big props for Neutral Milk Hotel. I would rather listen to a Phil Collins album....with the twat sat next to me.

I think enthusiasm for In The Aeroplane Over The Sea will waver over the next few years. It was once an unknown album that people discovered and loved and delighted in the fact that they had an 'undiscovered gem'. But as more and more people come to discover it, it's pretty much a famous album on the interwebs now, and it becomes more and more cool to like it, I think that a lot of people will drop it. A lot of people will see it as 'something too popular to love'.

I love NMH but I have to agree with the over-zealous attitude towards ITAOTS. I also think OAI is far more rewarding. Although lawl at nobody linking the fact it's so popular because the jews did it again.
