Rules:

1) Please submit five tracks that you feel are the artists' best - they can be hits, album tracks, b-sides, rarities...anything you want, really - but please include the releases on which the songs appear. The five songs with the most votes will appear on the list.

2) Please submit one album that you feel is the artist's crowning glory, their classic album, if you like. Whichever album gets the most votes will appear on the list. Live albums are allowed but compilations are not allowed.

3) Please submit two artists which you feel have a similar sound, either from the same era or genre, that would give an indication of how the artists sounds and also would be a good suggestion for further artists to explore. The top two or three will be posted, depending on number of votes.

4) Please include a brief line or paragraph that explains exactly why the artist means so much to you. The best of these will be included as quotes beneath the artists' names, on the list
PLEASE NOTE THAT, ALTHOUGH IT'S NOT COMPULSORY TO INCLUDE ONE, QUOTES PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE WITHIN THE LIST. SONG AND ALBUM RECOMMENDATIONS ALONE WILL NOT GIVE USERS THE FULL PICTURE. TELL US WHAT AN ARTIST SOUNDS LIKE, WHY YOU LIKE THEM AND WHAT KIND OF INFLUENCE THEY HAVE ON TODAY'S ARTISTS.

5) Polls will be open for a week, after which I will collate the votes and transfer the results to the list. I shall also re-edit the first post of the artists thread to show the full write up.

6) Polls will be launched twice a week.

7) Every artist must receive at least five sets of votes. If, after a week of polling, a particular artist has not received five or more sets of votes, then that poll will still remain open but will not get onto the list until another chance comes around, possibly a few months later.

Each entry is set out in the same way. Here is a key to the information you can expect to find...

4) Metallica is the band that got me into music. Before I heard them, I would listen to the local rock station occasionally. But I downloaded an mp3 of "Battery" and it was like nothing I ever heard before. Pretty classical guitar - and then epic electric guitar - then chaos! It captivated me instantly, and I listened to it over and over. I don't fit the profile of a typical metalhead. But this music definitely connected with me on a deep emotional level. From that point on, I was a Metallica fan for life.

i knew Metallica by the t-shirts and backpatches i saw around my junior high long before hearing their music for the first time. It was 1987 on the edge of nowhere in canada and their image was a manifestation of underground word of mouth and cassette tape copies. they were 'that' band, and lucky for us they lived up to it.

hell i still wear my 'ride the lightning' t-shirt on laundry day hehe

Apart from the first three I barely like anything by them (new album i'm not familiar enough with yet to make track recommendations) and I think that Garage, Inc is one of their best releases. I can hardly put that down as an essential guide to them can I? lol

Metallica is one of the defining bands in not just metal history, but music history. Their first 4 albums are defining thrash metal albums. The Black Album is solid hard rock. Load And Reload are almost blues rock at some points. St. Anger is one of the jokes in the music world, almost universally agreed upon (although not by myself) as one of the worst produced and worst sounding albums in the last decade. And yet the band's still going, and their latest release isn't half bad. And due to this growth and diversity in their sound, I can usually find a Metallica song to jam along to no matter what mood I'm in. If I can't handle Whiplash at the moment, fine, I can pop in Bleeding Me. If I'm ready to kill myself, Fade To Black is the right song:)

Well like most they're the band that got me into metal, for that in itself they're worth a lot. The appeals universal, you've got the more mellow stuff on the Black Album and then all the riffs on the first few thrash albums, never that much more then they needed, always pretty compact. You could argue they've lost their way now but those first few albums are untouchable, for sure.

Metallica. I have been listening to Metallcia for quite some time now. My brother got me listening to them when I was about 12 years old. Ever since then I have pretty much been addicted. I love Metllica's unique sound. I love that they are themselves, and have fun with their music. Of course they have went through their tough times just like any other band with James going through rehab, losing Jason Newsted, and also losing Bob Rock but they still remain strong and keep coming with the new music. I was pretty impressed with the new album, "Death Magnetic." It brings back their old style with a touch of newness to it. I absolutley love it. Like the other people have said, Metallica isn't just a metal band, they are an american legend and will live on.

Yeah, Cliff Burton was pretty much expendable.

TBH, I don't think their sound would have changed whatsoever. Cliff certainly influenced their early sound, but Hetfield and Hammett dominated as principle songwriters.
