My Top 4 Favorite Albums of Each Year
I thought about doing one of the "100 Favorite Albums Ever" threads, but I decided to do something a little different. It'd be nearly impossible to perfect the order of such a list, but ranking my four favorite albums of each year (I'm doing four so that I can do one year in each post) wouldn't be nearly as difficult. Anyway, I'll start with 1966, as many here might not care about anything earlier.
1966: 1. Sun Ra - The Magic City http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s26720.jpg Possibly the greatest jazz album ever in my opinion. Years ahead of its time. 2. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s63.jpg One of the most flawlessly beautiful pop albums ever created. A masterpiece. 3. The Beatles - Revolver http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s206.jpg This is the album that got me into music. I realize now that it's not the greatest album ever (or near being), but it'll always have meaning to me. 4. Monks - Black Monk Time http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s7469.jpg An incredibly simple, yet incredibly fun garage rock album that is often called "the first punk rock album". I don't know about that, but here it is. |
1967:
1. Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s4869.jpg Captain Beefheart's real masterpiece. A perfect blend of blues, garage rock, and weirdness. 2. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s173.jpg Probably the most influential record to come out of the 60s (although I prefer White Light/White Heat). 3. Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s3120.jpg A beautiful folk masterpiece. This eclipses anything Bob Dylan ever did, in my opinion. 4. Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s1030.jpg Pink Floyd's psychedelic masterpiece. I fell in love with this on my first listen. Just great. |

1968:
1. The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s174.jpg To me, this is TVU's masterpiece. Not even their debut could prepare people for this. 2. Nico - The Marble Index http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s8428.jpg This is perhaps the masterpiece of any of The Velvet Undergrounds' members' solo careers. Dark, haunting, and beautiful. 3. The Zombies - Odessey & Oracle http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s9363.jpg Perhaps even more beautiful than Pet Sounds, I don't know. A masterpiece of 60s pop. I was obsessed with this a few years ago. 4. Silver Apples - Silver Apples http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s26024.jpg Way ahead of its time. I guess it sounds like the 60s, but at the same time it sort of doesn't. A true gem. |
Cool list so far, I've wanted to do this myself for a bit, but I don't know enough music to do that. Some years I only own 2 albums that came out, and some, (1974 and 1982) I don't own any.
Keep in mind I don't have speakers on my computer, or a CD burner, and when I get music I have to walk 3 miles to the record store. Woe is me:( |
1969:
1. Gal Costa - Gal http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...es/s530571.jpg The masterpiece of tropicália, in my opinion. Gal Costa was influenced by bands like Jefferson Airplane, which I think helps it hold up so well. 2. King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s2328.jpg This is, in my mind, the true masterpiece of prog-rock, not some Pink Floyd record. Definitely one of the best albums of the 1960s. Beautiful. 3. Brigitte Fontaine & Art Ensemble of Chicago - Comme à la radio http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s38216.jpg Although it's hard to say, this might be the best project the Art Ensemble of Chicago involved themselves in. Definitely should be better known. Seems to stand the test of time remarkably well, too. 4. Catherine Ribeiro + 2 Bis - Catherine Ribeiro + 2 Bis http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s21609.jpg Definitely an overlooked masterpiece of the 60s. It's a shame so many people give USA's album more credit over this. |
