Why underground music is more enjoyable
 

Now don't get me wrong, mainstream music is good, and it serves a purpose, but if you want to hear amazing music you have to look at the bands who work several part time jobs and work hard for everything.

It's all good being a childish Weezer fan liking different coloured albums, and frankly their latest, red album, was quite bollocks, but they've already gotten to a point where they're well known and sell millions of records.

But it seems to me it's socially unacceptable to have a favourate band as a local one. Three of my favourate bands are unsigned and I know one/two of them pretty well. They're:

Army of Freshmen
Fell on Black Days
Dirty Bob

And when I bring them up in conversation about music, people seem to not give to ****s because they're not signed or not on Kerrang! or Scuzz, but these are the bands that work a hundred times harder to get to that stage. These are the bands still making a name for themselves, who take risks musically and put their necks on the line to get better and expand.

You know that if you buy their merchandise it buys them petrol home or a meal or a few drinks. If you buy merch' for a big time band, you know it just goes towards another sports car.

I think it's time we realise the potential, skill and brilliance of unsigned local bands.

All bands start of the bottom so the big bands will have already served their apprenticeship. Manufactured bands are just that and nobody on here listens to them anyway or is this another thinly veiled rant about all the music you dislike?

Who gave this thread five fucking stars already? The place is turning into a nuthouse.

I've seen so many crappy bands in pubs it's unbelievable. Most have them don't have an original bone in their entire bodies. In the mid 90s it was endless Nirvana clones , in the late 90s it was ****ty punk pop bands and now it's endless fall out boy / MCR / faux emo bands clogging up the pubs.

I don't care how big or small you are it's what you sound like that i'm interested in.

I did once see a death metal band playing Slayer covers with a bubble machine switched on in a pub. That was entertaining for 5 minutes.

In the last two weeks I've been to two huge "battle of the bands-esque" shows, and saw about 20 local bands. I'd estimate that 15 of those bands were wanna be emo bands with absolutely no originality whatsoever. 3 thought they were the next coming of nirvana... they weren't. 1 was a band trying to sound like 90s pop rock or something, it was really embarassing. The only good one was a metal/hardcore band called Affiance that I actually ended up hanging out with. So yeah, local bands do not have a good track record with me. Maybe its just where I live (Cleveland)?

Same. If it's good (to me), I listen to it. It's of no concern to me whether it is mainstream or indie.

what happens when one of those local bands makes it big time? do you burn their merch and key their new sports car?

Let's refine my original comment then. What I'm saying is the truly hardworking bands that, like I said, are taking risks musically, are more entertaining than say, ACDC, because no offence to ACDC, but they're just doing the same old thing all the time. They've done it to death.

I'd be happy in the fact that I helped them when they needed money and always supported them.

In other words, you like to hear new things. I don't think that'll be too controversial.
