Default Trying to get into music...

I've never really been into music, but I recently downloaded iTunes and In Rainbows.

I'm trying to get into music, but I really have no idea whats out there, what I like, etc.

Anyone want to give me pointers to good bands/albums?

well if you like radioheads new album you might want to start by downloading all of their albums. a few suggestions of compeltely different albums and sounds would be

older stuff (last 50ish years)
the beach boys - pet sounds
the beatles - sgt peppers and the lonely hearts clubs band
bob dylan - blonde on blonde
the doors - the doors
pink floyd - dark side of the mood
jimi hendrix - are you experienced ?
the velvet undergrond and nico - the velvet underground and nico
led zepplin - IV
metallica - and justice for all

newer stuff (last 10ish years)
arcade fire - funerals
arctic monkeys - whatever people say i am, that what i am not
daft punk - homework
elliot smith - either/or
incubus - science
lcd soundsystem - sound of silver
mars volta - deloused in the comatorium
muse - absolution
of montreal - hising fauna are you the destroyer?
radiohead - kid a
the shins - oh, inverted world
the white stripes - elephant

these are just some of my personal favorite cds that i think have a decently round appeal. hope this helps.

I'm not saying the others you've mentioned are not worth it, but I definitely back you up on these.

Noone can give you pointers. You just have to find stuff out yourself in the beginning. Try using an internet radio like Pandora or last.fm to find some stuff at first then expand from there.

in addition to that Okkervil River "Black Sheep Boy" and Modest Mouse "The Moon and Antarctica"

then the list is complete.

know this is cliche' but you should get Nevermind by Nirvana.thats where i started. also Tom Petty/Bob Dylan never hurts if you want to go back to basics.

And Master of Puppets by Metallica. That Album ****ING ROCKS

Nevermind would be a good album to begin with. Then go on to Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, Mudhoney, Melvins, Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, and from there GO MAD!
