Should I produce for this duo? (lyrics, techno, pop, rock)

Met these two from Myspace. We live in the same area and they want to use me and my little studio (whole thing cost me just under $1000) to record a CD...EP, album, whatever, and sell it via CD Baby.

I met them and they gave me a sample of some music they've done already.

Sub-Bass on purevolume™

I wasn't too impressed with Todd's lyrical or vocal stylings, but I am seeing potential.

If I do this for them I'll get a % of whatever the disc sells, but if it doesn't sell well then this would be a huge waste of time so..

opinions?

EDIT: As far as I can tell, the vocals and guitar are the only "real" instruments they use. Everything else is done virtually, through Midi.

I think do it.
How much experience have you got? Because the more the better really and none of it is really a waste of time.
And maybe, just maybe you can subtly suggest to Todd that he make some changes, try something new.
And if vocals and guitar are the only real instruments, it shouldn't be too taxing.

Hey bud... just saw that you signed up for this website (finally!). Vocals actually aren't too bad, the distortion effect is kind of cool. There is potential for a noise rock type deal I suppose, and theres usually a market for expirimental stuff so... I would say do it too.

I hate to sound like an inspirational poster but it's the truth. I never turned a project down. It's amazing how much knowledge you gain from, say, a single. In this field of work with this amount of technology, there really is no stopping you.

But remember, that's not saying I didn't like the music. But as a producer I'm sure you know that does not matter.

As long as you have the ear for it, you can do something good with these two.

**Pay attention to that constant humming. That really pulls the listener in. It's subtle, but not annoying, yet intriguing.

But you are right on the lyrics and the vocal effects. Maybe try something else out.

But yeah, definitely do it. Why wouldn't you? It's so much fun!

I think that if you're not sure, don't do it. You've got instincts, right? Maybe you'll meet a band and think "**** yeah, I wanna produce those guys!" .. Although I didn't listen to it, your post doesn't exactly radiate motivation so I'm guessing you're not that thrilled.

You know - maybe you can turn a lump of coal into a diamond, but since coal often isn't that hard to find, maybe you can afford to be a bit selective.

It sounds to me like the potential is enough to override any doubts you might be having.

I think you do want to do it, or you wouldn't have bothered asking the forum, but that's just me.

I listened to the song and didn't really like it much. Why produce them if you have to rearrange everything they do in order to make them sound "good enough"? What you get then is just another fake band.

Wouldn't it be better if you heard a band or artist and thought they were damn good and the job you wanted to do as a producer was to somehow capture that goodness on an album recording?

I understand that my post might come across as slightly naive and idealistic, but that's how I'd feel about it. I also know plenty of people that I think deserve a record deal way more than these guys.

So what I'm saying at the end of my post, I guess, is this. Wether you're a cynical ****er only doing it for you or a naive idealistic who wants to find the perfect band and help them produce a kickass album, your time and effort may be better spent with someone else than these guys. I know you're talking about your little home studio and selling stuff over the net, but still .. aim higher.

Hey guys... thanks for all the answers. I decided to do this.

You make some good points Tortorden, however I had already agreed to do it before I could see them.

Not a problem though, because this turned out to be more fun than I had expected! They are definetly going in a more pop direction for this CD (it's an EP).

Click on the link I posted to hear our first take from our first session. It's got alot of editing problems right now, no polish. The lyrics are unfinished as well (Fun run run run fun run run won't be staying!)
We won't be using that take for the EP, but it gives you a kind of idea.
