"Viva La Vida" of "If I could fly"?

Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay accusing them of plagiarizing his song "If I could fly".

you can read the story here: Guitarist Satriani accuses Coldplay of plagiarism - Yahoo! News

and hear the song here: YouTube - Joe Satriani - if i could fly

I think he has a case there...

adidasss 12-05-2008 10:13 AM

I don't.

Janszoon 12-05-2008 10:27 AM

Well, I can certainly hear some similarities in the first few notes of the melody, but it doesn't resolve in the same way so I'd say that makes it not the same. There's only so many combinations of notes out there, these things happen. Satriani needs to get over himself.

dac 12-05-2008 11:44 AM

The chord progressions are the same but Satriani is a tool so I hope he loses.

jackhammer 12-05-2008 12:19 PM

Coldplay not original shocker? Well god damn.

Yeah, that too. He's actually providing an important service for people right now. For all those people who seem to think Chris Martin is a tool, Satriani is coming out to show them all what a real tool is like.

sweet_nothing 12-05-2008 03:21 PM

Didnt somebody else sue coldplay awhile back for the same reason?

kyleargyle 12-05-2008 03:31 PM

the beginning of the riff does sound very close...but it's probably just a coincidence more than anything. i guarantee coldplay doesn't listen to joe satriani. very few people do.

Yeah they fell asleep while listening to X & Y and he whacked his head. Adam Ant is also ready with the costume plagarising lawsuit as we speak.

Yeah but it turned out to be a coincidence and was probably nothing more than a brilliant PR move by an obscure indie band. Anyway I can safely say I don't care.

Akira 12-05-2008 05:40 PM

Maybe Britney should sue Muse for this:

spark10036 12-05-2008 06:32 PM

well they do look similar, but u r right, not enough to take them to court. when I said he had a case, I meant that they do seem to be inspired by his track.

FaSho 12-05-2008 06:36 PM

They sound pretty awesome together at the end of this video

Alpha Centauri 12-05-2008 06:45 PM

Everyone knows that music is really just a copy of the first one.
the music from nowadays, came back from beethoven and such, and even farther back XD
look at basshunter, they copied of another song and then made a song just like it but with different lines.

The Britney song is 100000000x better.

Janszoon 12-08-2008 07:22 PM

I saw this posted posted on another forum and thought it was funny. I'm pretty sure this song is older than both the Satriani song and the Coldplay song (the part to listen for is at 0:34):

Satriani is such a douche.

Fruitonica 12-08-2008 07:41 PM

I realised a while ago that the Pussy Cat Dolls' , "When I grow up" ripped their main riff straight off "He's Always There" by The Yardbirds.

It was driving me crazy trying to think where I'd heard it before.

Alfred 12-08-2008 08:11 PM

Satriani has to prove that Coldplay heard the song before they wrote "Viva La Vida".

...As chris martin burns all of his satriani records.

I think that Argentine band I just posted the video of should sue Satriani. It would make things so much more entertaining.

guitargirl_93 12-08-2008 09:44 PM

Why does everyone hate Joe Satriani? I think he's an amazing guitarist & musician.

It's because he's one of the most well-known examples of someone who is so focused on the technical side of playing that his music is bland and boring. Also, he's always seemed like kind of a jackass.

Pretty much. And his fans are the most snobbish f*cks on earth. Anything you put on isn't as fast or as talented as Satriani's stuff.

sweet_nothing 12-08-2008 10:47 PM

Chris briefly talks about it on the 3rd video (3:30)

Joe Satriani drops lawsuit against COLDPLAY

If you haven't heard Coldplay was accused of stealing the melody to Joe Satriani's song called "If I Could Fly" the song Coldplay released was called "Viva La Vida" I believe that Coldplay won awards for this CD and not sure but I think the song also. But its really not the point. I love Joe's music and have listened for a long time....but I also listen to Coldplay and I have heard both songs and Coldplay totally stole the melody....I couldn't believe it. Joe should have held out for them to have to admit wrong doing....but they still had to pay royalities. I really hope if this song gets played on the radio that he gets royalities for it too....the whole thing just frosted my buns. Never steal something from another artist....just not right

The Unfan 09-18-2009 07:00 AM

Having heard both, I think its just a coincidence. There are only so many different notes you can play in so many different orders. Pretty much all music sounds similar to another peice of music.

Guybrush 09-18-2009 07:33 AM

Appearantly, they're both predated by yet another version of "that song" by Enanitos Verdes.

The tone-deaf idiot who made this vid decided to overlap them now and then in this vid which is obviously not a good idea since they're not all played in the same key and tempo, but some parts are okay for comparisons. ;)

Certif1ed 09-18-2009 08:15 AM

I thought the original tune was by Cat Stevens...

Engine 09-18-2009 08:24 AM

Hey - I once randomly hummed that generic succession of notes back in '82.
I'm rich.

Piss Me Off 09-18-2009 08:50 AM

Bloody hell stop making threads about this people.

sleepy jack 09-18-2009 04:45 PM

lol. it's really just a common/nice sounding melody. Cat Stevens also accused Coldplay of stealing it from him among other artists...
