Default Indie Jazz?

Not independently released jazz, but an indie/jazz hybrid of music...

Modest Mouse, Lightspeed Champion, I'm From Barcelona, The Killers, of Montreal(and so on) type bands with freeform brass, woodwind, piano and drum solos...

And by Jazz I mean 1930s+ Southern US jazz, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Cannonball Adderley Quintet, and things like that.

Things like that...

Does it exist?

:peace:

Modest Mouse? The Killers? Lmfao...

The Opium Cartel is the only Indie-ish band that comes to mind that could possibly be considered jazzy at all, and even that's a stretch tbh.

But since when has doing only one song defined an artist/group's particular style compared to the rest of the discography?

I didn't say any of those bands were Indie/Jazz. I'm asking for bands with similar sounds, but also with jazz.

And that Modest Mouse song was actually the one that sparked my interest.

Indie is the most imperialistic genre ever.

check out motorpsycho's 'in the fishtank' sessions where they hook up with other groups. particularly their collaboration with the horn section of jaga jazzist..

thing is jazz isn't really one of those styles that assimilates well into others, one side usually overpowers the other. it's the difference between a focus on songwriting or performance. are you looking for jazzy music with indie aesthetics like lo-fi production and fuzzy guitars? or are you looking for indie rock with unorthodox instrumentation?

Check out early Andrew Bird stuff, when he was "Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire." It's very different from his later work.

Icy Demons might kind of fit the bill for what you're looking for too.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Yeah, I guess I would say "indie rock with unorthodox instrumentation", specifically brass and woodwind.
