I have to agree slightly. I really really like 70% of their output and I mean REALLY like but some of their stuff epsecially from the last ten years comes close to a slightly more polished and less aggressive Nu-Metal. I have an interview with Steven Wilson in which he actually admitted that he wanted a more aggressive sound as bands such as Meshuggah and Opeth were gaining bigger fanbases and this just put me off them slightly. What I always liked about PT was their organic approach to music. Their early Ambient stuff is excellent and then when guitars became more prominent they were still integrated well into their sound. to then start basing songs around standard Metal riffs seemed to lose a little of their organic qualities.

As I said PT have made some of my very favourite music but some tracks just leave me completely unimpressed.

The Smiths

Ive never understood the reverence this band gets. A couple of songs, such as the boy with a thorn in his side, how soon is now?, charming man and the joke isnt funny anymore, sure, excellent. The Queen is Dead and Meat is Murder are just average albums. I cant help but think a lot of their fan base just comes from the iconic status they seem to have. Its cool to like The Smiths.

But does something have to be "groundbreaking" for it to be remarkable? I'm not arguing against including Interpol on this thread (they definitely belong), but stylistic breakthroughs aren't prerequisites for greatness. Born To Run is probably the best example that comes to mind.

Have you heard their song "North American Scum"? That song, and the album it comes from (Sound Of Silver) might change your mind, if you've only heard their self-titled debut.

I'm not sure if I've heard it or not. A friend of mine gave me a copy of the first one so I know I've heard that, I think this same person may have played the newer one for me but I'm not sure.

Well, I only mentioned it because I also found their debut a bit boring. I wasn't planning on even listening to their next one, but music-y friends of mine were raving about it...and it is much, much better, IMO. "North American Scum" is a tremendous pop gem.

On the contrary, i happen to think the s/t is an excellent album and the Sound Of Silver as being distinctly average

Just listened to it. I don't know, it didn't really click with me for whatever reason. It wasn't horrible or anything but nothing I'd go out of my way to listen to. That pretty much how I feel about everything I've heard by them.

Fair enough. I wouldn't have mentioned it, had I not specifically found one of their albums dull and one really good.
