Favorite Three Albums?- Any Genre
What are your favorite three full albums? As in, albums that you love every single song on it, can love it in its entirety.
For me: 1. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel 2. In a Safe Place by The Album Leaf 3. Tie between: Plans by Death Cab for Cutie-- Lines in My Face by Chronic Future *technically my top four but whatever |
Man, tough question - too many albums to love to narrow it down to three, but if I really had to, it would look something like...
1. Act of Free Choice - David Bridie: Australian singer / songwriter experiments with atmopsherics and electronics, and prduces an absolute masterpiece. 2. Terria - Devin Townsend Band: Strapping Young Lad vocalist and guitarist also has a pretty prolific solo back catalogue, and its equally as good as his SYL stuff, and Terria is as epic as it comes. 3. October Rust - Type O Negative: "The Drab Four" made something timeless here, particularly the two last tracks, "Wolf Moon" and "Haunted" - both equally atmospheric and intense and written from deep dark places. |
The Drought is Over 2- Lil Wayne
Double Nickels On the Dime- Minutemen The Mouse and the Mask- Dangerdoom No order. All of them are for the reason stated in the first post: I can listen to them entirely and enjoy them. |
1. Larks' Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson -- I love the group to death in all their incarnations, but this jewel of an album defined their dark, percussive beauty to me in a way that makes it seem insurmountable ever though its been over 30 years. Highly recommended and at the top of my 3 for a reason.
2. Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin -- Often considered to be a step down by even casual listeners, I'm actually of the opinion that this album is their finest work by far, as they actually began to experiment beyond what was convenient. No Quarter, D'yer Mak'er, Rain Song, Over the Hills and Far Away....all special to me in equally important ways. :) 3. Script For A Jester's Tear by Marillion -- The album that began the Neo-Prog era back in the good ol' 80's, and undoubtedly the best. This baby showed me a whole new side of things I tell ya! The titular track and He Knows You Know give the record a strong opening, but when you throw in a godlike sprawler like Grendel on the B-side and the killer slow-burn of something like Charting the Single, you have something cool indeed. |
There are some truly diverse / interesting choices of albums popping up here - but I really like the definition given for a truly great album - something you can listen to and find absolutely nothing weak about - consistently good, good over repeated listens - true marks fo fine albums that will endure...

Top 3 Albums that I've just recently listened to, because I feel like I've listed my top 5 or so albums on MusicBanter about 20 times...
Citay - Little Kingdom Cranes - Cranes Pretty Things - S. F. Sorrow |
All Time, or just for 2008?
All Time, I'd say(too many to name, so I'll give you three off my list): Depeche Mode-Violator-Argueable thee greatest DM album ever. I don't think you can find a stinker on the disc, as every song is wonderful. I wish they'd make another "Violator". Music For the Masses(as for DM) is a close second, as my favorite DM disc ever. The Smiths-Meat is Murder-Thee best Smiths disc EVER!!!! I've had to replace my MIM disc 3 times, due to overplaying, it's that good. Journey-Infinity-Argueably the best Journey disc ever. Perry's vocals throughout are why i became such a huge Journey fan. Plus, Gregg Rollie was fantastic on this disc as well. Close second: Evolution/Departure. For 2008? Don't know, as I dont listen to current music too much. I'd say I'm really enjoying The Cure's new one 4:13 Dream. |
Uh... at the moment:
Rubber Soul- The Beatles Actually, thats the only album I can think of that I can enjoy from start to finish. Usually there are at least 1 or 2 tracks, if not more, that I dislike. On the other hand, I don't think Rubber Soul has any end-all, amazing tracks. Its just really well-rounded and listenable to me. |
I would write a list of my top three albums of 2008, but it would be a risky proposition - I only bought three albums this year due to a fairly tight budget - so I know there is WAY more out there than I have had the pleasure of hearing...

I am picking the first three that come to my head...
Muse-Origin of Symmetry Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon Tool-AENIMA |

1. Reanimation - Linkin Park
Their best album, in my opinion. It's more than just a remix album, as most of the songs sound almost nothing like the older songs. Has some pretty nice guests (Zion-I, Pharoahe Monch, Chali 2na, Evidence, Cheapshot, Planet Asia, etc.) and is one of the albums that I have been able to listen to, since I first got it. It's been one of my favorites for almost seven years. 2. Absolute Power - Tech N9ne One of the best albums, I've ever heard. This album shows Tech's versatility. He does songs ranging from "The Industry Is Punks" which speaks on how the radio doesn't want anything new, and only wants reincarnations, to "Trapped In A Psycho's Body", which is a dark-tale of the person that is Aaron D. Yates, and the persona that has taken over, Tech N9ne. One of those albums that i can still go back and listen to over and over. Classic, in my books. I'll add a third, later. Can't think of one, now. |
1. Meddle - Pink Floyd
2. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd 3. Nevermind - Nirvana |
Squender - I always had to juggle which Pink Floyd album I liked better - Meddle or Dark Side of the Moon? I mean I love Dark Side for all that it is - a creative, brilliant, cerebral statement in rock music that tackles weighty matters of life and death... But Meddle is just so full of great ideas, has looser, less rigid structure to it - it sounds like a band that is well aware of its powers but hasn't become arrogant or self important yet - and it has Echoes - 22 minutes of some of the best instrumental music ever released in my opinion... in fact alot of the time Meddle won my Dark Side vs. Meddle competitions in my head...
