Teachers/professors tastes in music.
 

Alright, so one odd thing I enjoy doing is finding out what my educators inject into their ear drums.
I find the sheer range to be quite interesting.
Not only is entertaining to me, but it also builds a personal relationship with them if it goes well.

I got to a school for the performing arts, and while there, I noticed something interesting.
Most of the academic teachers enjoyed more mainstream (and in some cases generic) 80s rock and general pop.
The art teachers on the other hand, listen to more progressive, and, well, artistic music.

Examples:
-My Geometry teachers music collection basically consists of 80's hair and synth pop.

-My Piano teacher listens to prog rock and jazz. He has posters on his wall from Radiohead, Yes, Genesis, Red King Crimson, Keith Jarrett, and many more.

i haven't been in school in pretty much a decade (only 2 student loan payments left WOOHOO!!!!)

one of the last teachers i had kept my copies of faith no more's 'the real thing' and fu manch's 'the action is go'. he also freaked out when he found out my friends and i liked mr. bungle and introduced us to john zorn. in the end he turned out to be a bit of a douche though.

One of my old high school teachers was a dedicated Poison fan. Went to all the concerts, love Brett Michael, and was a semi professional rocketteir. We think he was ***.

I for once have teachers that aren't in to rap.

My math/science teacher is into band slike Finch, and a lot of "real screamo"

and my language teacher like a bit of eveything. Big Black,Arcade Fire,BobMarley,The Cure etc.

My homeroom teacher likes a lot of rap like Wu Tang Clan and stuff.

My guitar teacher is freakin' awesome. Enjoys Jazz, prog, classic rock... he's heard of and knows quite a bit about pre-1990 music.

I know one teacher likes Sepultura and Slayer (also heads the schools Anime club) but apart from that I'm not nearly close enough to my teachers to know.

my history teacher listens to Floyd, Zappa, and, suprisingly, Coltrane and Miles Davis. So yeah, thats pretty cool

My old english teacher was a deadhead. He had a poster of them on his wall, and on the last day of school he brought the jacket he wears to concerts into school. It was awesome.

My bio teacher was into hardcore, but she was weird. All the others..no clue.

I was interested in what my teachers listened to though I'd have considered it perhaps impertinent to ask them... even if I was close to some of them, there still is a teacher/student boundary. Having said that, I was in an Opeth phase in school and some friends and I lent our music teacher one of their CDs and he liked it - bearing in mind he's in his 50s and listens mainly to jazz/classical.


At university, student/lecturer relationships of course tend to be more tenuous, though I now chat to some of my lecturers because I work on the same floor as them at uni and have a collaboratory relationship with a few of them.

One of my lecturers was trying to motivate the study of electrical engineering and he commented on the amount of engineering knowledge and ingenuity which goes into the design of an iPod so that "you kids can listen to Tool or whatever it is you listen to nowadays".

One of my maths lecturers had a habit of putting on music while she was setting up at the beginning of each lecture - for her first one, she played U2 - Vertigo to an audience of a few hundred, possibly with the intention of showing us young'uns she could be hip too. Either way, I facepalmed.

One of my younger software lecturers from last year (who's doing his PhD) absolutely owns at piano. At one stage, we had a class conversation about Herbie Hancock. Anyway, he wrote and performed this hilarious song:
