Big McLargeHuge 100

Welcome to my thread. I know most of you don’t know or care who I am, but this looked like a lot of fun, and I want to better establish myself in this community, so here I am. As per MB tradition, I’ll be listing 100 albums by 100 different artists.

Disclaimer: I’m not an indie kid. I don’t claim to have ultra-obscure tastes; I’m not going to list obscure artists just to show my musical diversity. This will be an honest list. There will be classic rock. If you want a list of artists you’ve never heard before, you’ll probably need to look elsewhere.

I’ll probably update this thread every other day.

100. Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998)

I must say, I expected the insane amount of hype given to this album to spoil my enjoyment of it, but surprisingly enough, I found that I really liked it. The music has a sort of strange, almost surreal quality to it, and it conjures up some wild imagery in my mind. Though Magnum’s voice took some getting used to, it really grew on me by the second listen.

Standout tracks – The King of Carrot Flowers Part 1, Holland 1945, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

99. Incubus – S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (1997)

I love how spastic this album is. It’s in your face, it hits you hard, and its bombastic guitar and vocals really come alive. There’s definitely a funk and hip-hop influence here, kind of like a heavier version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I don’t like this as much as I used to, but it still deserves a mention.

Standout tracks – Redefine, A Certain Shade of Green, Favorite Things

98. Mastodon – Blood Mountain (2006)

I’m not a huge metal fan, to be honest. What little metal I do listen to is usually to humor my boyfriend, who is a huge metalhead. That being said, this album really stood out to me. It’s pretty weird music compared to a lot of the metal I’ve heard, and a lot of the tracks feel almost trippy, for metal anyway. It’s hard for me to describe it as I’m not an expert on this sort of stuff.

Standout tracks – Colony of Birchmen, Sleeping Giant, The Wolf Is Loose

97. Weather Report – Heavy Weather (1977)

I don’t see this band talked about much, but they’re one of my favorite jazz acts. I’m a big fan of jazz fusion, so this album is a real treat. The instruments all stand out, particularly the keyboards and bass (courtesy of the late, great Jaco Pastorius). It really grabs you and makes you want to dance along. It's not all upbeat either, "A Remark You Made" is one of my favorite songs to chill to.

Standout tracks – A Remark You Made, Birdland, Palladium

Mad love for both of these. Mastodon is one of the most creative bands in the American metal wave and perhaps one of the best to grace the metal scene in recent times. The drumming is absolutely insane, but the rest of the band's got chops as well. Sleeping Giant is a massive track.

Weather Report is unquestionably one of the best jazz fusion bands ever, and their 1977 standout Heavy Weather affirms that. Definitely an album worth checking out if your into jazz, or even if you're not. It's damn good and it doesn't sound dated at all, unlike the majority of the crap that passed through the seventies.

I have a feeling I'm going to like this list a lot.

I swear, every 100 albums list has this album in it.

Don't worry. Mine certainly will NOT have it in!

And neither will mine.

I don't think much of Neutral Milk Hotel or Incubus, but Mastodon and Heavy Weather certainly look like an interesting couple of albums. Decent start you've made to your list here, looking forward seeing more from ya

Heavy Weather is a great album but I just can't get into Mastodon. A lot of my friends don't like it either. In fact it bores me!

Kudos on the Mastodon, i still have no idea what my favourite album by them is.
