Cheesiest music event you've gone to and actually had fun...and why was it fun?

What's the cheesiest music event you've been to, but still had fun? Why was it fun?

dac 02-24-2009 08:22 AM

Third Eye Blind for sure. They got the crowd so involved and just had a whole lot of fun with it. Plus, everyone was completely hammered.

crash_override 02-24-2009 10:13 AM

Dave Matthews.

I have never been to a really bad concert in my life because I choose who I want to see in the first place. I have been to night clubs now and again and have enjoyed a bit of cheesy 80's music. Worst gig I went to recently was Killing Joke. I am a big fan but they just seemed so lacklustre. The Best was Dreadzone who are an electro/dub/reggae band. Never had so much fun at a gig before.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-25-2009 11:16 AM

As each gig I go to costs around £400 in air fares & hotels I don't tend to go to see cheesy bands.

Janszoon 02-25-2009 12:26 PM

I saw Dar Williams several years ago with my then girlfriend. I don't know if any of you are familiar with Dar Williams but she plays the cheesy brand of "girl with a guitar" folk music that you can hear being performed in millions of coffee shops on any given evening. This type of music is definitely not my cup of espresso double latte but my girlfriend wanted to go so I went. Needless to say Dar Williams was boring as shit but Keb Mo opened for her and he was really good. And most importantly it was at this outdoor music venue in the north suburbs of Chicago called Ravinia that just has a great atmosphere (and an amazing sound system) no matter who you're listening to:

Does it count if it wasn't actually a bands concert

If so..... my college's 'Rock Night' would be counted as the cheesiest music event I went to
It was basically a 4 hour gig with a bunch of local bands and bands based in the school.

It was a good laugh, and it's always fun to see people trying to start mosh pits with various teachers

The highlight of one of these rock nights was one where this one guy playing on stage decided to do a stage dive.
Now this guy was never really well-liked.... the butt of many a joke back at college.... and if you've ever seen School of Rock, thinking of the beginning scene where Jack Black tries to do a stage dive and you'll pretty much the same image. Only when this guy did it he landed on a small girl and ripped her skirt.

I go to cheesy punk rock/ska shows in Allston all the time. I pretty much never listen to this kind of music outside the shows but I enjoy the scene... its worth some laughs and its always a good time. PBR, pits, leather, and punk rock girls. Good or bad music, it's a blast.

When they started playing, my partner and I looked at each other, like WTF!... (Don’t want to offend any Gipsy Kings fans here if there are any--I guess they are okay in their own right. But, "Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk" is just not my cup of tea, if you know what I mean.)

Dude, Gipsy Kings are awesome.

But on a less serious note, the lamest thing I've gone to was obviously my school dance. Not really sure if it counts, but it was quite funny moshing to Boys Like Girls with some of the preppiest kids I've ever met and getting more injuries than I have at a concert!

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-25-2009 04:31 PM

Not far off actually

Yeah, any music event, probably the less formal, the cheesier, therefore, the better. Your mosh pit story is funny.

I knew I was going to offend somebody. In all fairness to them, it wasn't what I was into at the time (1990s), and had I had any sense and listened to them BEFORE I went, I would have been better prepared. I haven't listened to them since, so I should give them another try, I suppose. Nevertheless, they were responsible for a really good time!

@ Janszoon: Keb Mo opening for Dar Williams!!! It should have been the other way around. Keb Mo is AWESOME. I notice that, in the US at least, he's been playing in some "questionable" venues. For instance, I was in Tahoe for a conference and I saw his name on a marquis at a really cheesy casino. I don't get it--he's so good musically. He needs a better agent...

Pianogirl75 02-25-2009 06:05 PM

Pig out in the Park, Spokane WA. We heard this crazy zydeco band, which was definitely not my kind of music at the time. But we had great fun, the atmosphere was very laid back and everyone was dancing. And there was food. That's a plus.

So is it the Azores then? Or I seem to remember your profile used to say Greenland?

Long ago I went to see The Offspring- they were so terrible live. The poster only listed two bands, but there were three. I thought Quicksand was actually Offspring and thought "Wow, they rock! I've never heard these songs before!" then 5 songs later the singer said "Hi everyone, we're Quicksand"

Offspring came out later and I couldn't believe how terrible they were. The drummer couldn't keep a beat and got tired. The band was always facing each other, lost and trying to find their place in the songs.

script7 02-26-2009 03:29 PM

I was a "Parrot head" for a night. When I went to a Jimmy Buffet show..Fans were a lot of fun but really not my type of music.

NSW 02-26-2009 05:59 PM

Sugar Ray, around 1998 maybe? The only reason I had a good time I because I was with a cute guy who kept beating the crap out of all the moshers that kept bumping into me. Yes...there were moshers at a Sugar Ray concert.

ganstapickle93 02-27-2009 12:37 AM

me and a coupple friends went to this teen music festival. when we got there all the bands were soft folk bands and when my friends band played every one was shocked because they were metal... it was really funny

Janszoon 02-27-2009 12:55 AM

Oh my god, I just realized I forgot about my best one ever: I saw this retarded screamo band Raise the Red Lantern at this crazy spot in Chicago up the street from my old apartment. Basically it was an old high-rise hotel that had been converted into apartments and the old lobby and entire first floor area had been converted into an extremely rundown cafe and art gallery that was only open intermittently. It actually felt kind of like a squatter situation that night because there was no heat and the majority of the light was coming from votive candles all over the place. And there were hula hoops all over the place.

Anyway, this was a birthday party for one of the owners of the cafe/gallery and a couple bands played including Raise the Red Lantern. They went on kind of on the late side, cranked their amps up all the way and promptly got complaints from the people who lived upstairs so the sound guy turned them down a bit. At which point two of the guys in the band threw complete rock star temper tantrums and threatened to beat up the sound guy. Then they very dramatically started packing up their gear. The way they were acting it was really obvious that they thought the audience was going to totally back them up, but instead people started loudly making fun of them for being such a bunch of dicks. And that's how it went as they marched in and out packing up their van, everybody continuously making fun of them. It was really pretty entertaining. :thumb:

I've seen a bunch of bands before who I don't actually like, aka the Metros and Art Brut, but they were great live acts nonetheless. The fact it was such a small venue means you can find the support bands at the bar or having a smoke outside after they've done their bit and have a little musical chat with them, which is always nice.

Oedipus Next 02-27-2009 12:13 PM

Watched entire "Riverdance" on Broadway--

Enjoyed it except for the fact that I kept thinking
"This is what music would be like today if the blues never happened." LOL

Yeah, I like that too. It only sucks on the rare occasion that the person turns out to be an asshole, which unfortunately was my experience talking to Damon Tutunjian from the Swirlies. But that's the exception, people I've talked to from other bands like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Dresden Dolls and even older, more established people like Subhumans and Dick Dale have all been pretty friendly.
