...thus far. Let's set a deadline for Wednesday-Friday for this trade.

Still haven't decided what the theme's gonna be. Might not even bother with one, unless anyone's got any ideas they wanna pitch?

THE FUTURE?

Wow. Never thought something so ugly is even remotely possible. He just took the whole classic boring folk music, and put a flanger on it for no apparent reason, in a very annoying unstoppable way.

And the song's about how his buddies are all far. How cliché. I can't believe this guy is famous.

you have no idea how hard I laughed at that.

i immediately googled his music and apparently this album's songs were played at 3 pitches at the same time.

Nope, but I'm not so sure it'd be so great for an album swap - I think it'd be an easier theme for evryone to adhere to for one of Tore's MB compilations.

I see where you're coming from. maybe it could just be themeless. i'm cool with that.

Listen, power pop. I know we've always sort of ignored each other, but I'm willing to give you a shot. Come on in.

And this is where things went bad.

"Boys Don't Lie" is all-around annoying. The sound isn't that great and the vocals are, honestly, some of the worst I've ever heard. The hooks it tries to use don't work and the whole thing is just generally a train wreck.
"Do You Wanna Get Lucky" features slightly less annoying vocals (though they're still terrible) and an actual guitar hook this time around, which isn't bad. The drums are still annoying and there's an ugly keyboard solo in here that I can't help but hate.
"She'll Disappear" is apparently the third in a trilogy of songs with horrible vocals, though the guitar-and-drums do some decent stuff here (though the drum tone is tediously tolerated). Maybe if this vocalist would go away for a while and they messed with the kit a little they'd have themselves a good album.
"Tragedy" starts off interesting with some burning synths and then segues into the main track. The other instruments don't fit with the synth at all, and then the vocals start and ARGHHHH

At this point (1:07 and change into Tragedy) I turned the album off and listened to the Mastodon I downloaded, since I had never given them a fair chance. It wasn't very good, so I tossed on a Melvins song ("Night Goat") and figured I'd give Black Vinyl Shoes another chance.

"Writing a Postcard" starts off with some very iffy guitar chords and then the rest of the song kicks off. The vocals are still awful.

"Not Me" has more mediocre instrumentation combining with the awful singing. I'm going to punch the Murphy brothers in the goddamn face.

"Someone Finer" seems to try and tone down the singing a bit in the mix, but it still made me vomit within the first 30 seconds. Apparently, if you try to turn down the singing, it gets worse. Maybe if I turn my volume up, the singing will get better?

Nope. The bass sounds cool at max volume, though!

"Capital Gain" is the same boring fuc‎king intro they've played on the past 6 songs with the vocals and etc. I think I've said enough.

"Fatal", "Running Start", "Okay", "It Really Hurts", "Fire For Awhile, "If You'd Stay" and "Nowhere So Fast" all sound like ass. Honestly, early on it seemed like the album could be better if the vocals were replaced and you switched some stuff around it could be better, but the more I listened the more I hated. There are a few songs I could've liked at some point in time, but overall, I'm never going to listen to this album again.

I will take the terrible reviews Unchained & I have posted as an omen that this trade is doomed for everyone and we will all hate the albums we were sent.

Tune in next time when I review Infected Mushroom's Vicious Delicious!

Ah, he sent me the same album. I sent you both different ones. Well...I was going to review that one first, but I'll give the Shoes bashing a rest and do the Steely Dan album you sent me. It should be up some time today.

NumberNineDream 08-02-2010 10:01 AM

Weird. I really like that album... No one thinks maybe it needs some time to settle in ?
