Songs that just sound better at a certain time of day/place
 

I have noticed that you can only get the full force and full meaning of some songs when you play them in a certain place or at a certain time of day.

For instance,
I ride the bus everyday for 45 minutes to get to school. We drive through many miles of country roads, and during this time, the sun is just coming up. I played the song "Can't You See" by The Marshall Tucker Band the other day on my bus ride and it sounded like a completly different song that when I listened to it the night before. The flute, the guitar, and his voice fit so well with my morning bus route, the sun coming up, getting ready to start the day, I could never listen to it again at any other time until I was on the bus going to school.

Here are a few others that have had this effect on me.

REM's cover of the Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" always sounds best to me at about 3 am when I'm up late working on a project.

Put on the Sigur Ros album "()" while you're driving in the rain. It will change your life.

I've listened to "Let's Kill The Summer" by The Singleman Affair on a cloudy summer day, I pretty much lost myself.

All of these sound awesome at when I stare at the stars when I walk my dog at night. This is just a few from the top of my head, so there's of course hundreds more I can't think of.

Well I think the overall vibe of a band usually fits in a certain part of the day. The Beatles are always good morning music. Tool are great for the dead of night. M83 also just doesn't sound right with too much light. I like folky stuff during the day, Bonnie "Prince" Billy or something along those lines.

Listening to "Hear comes the Sun" or "Good Day Sunshine" really isn't that fun if it ain't sunny out.

Hahaha yeah you'll zone out and drive off a cliff!!! Actually I once drove down the Pacific Coast Highway, which is full of sharp curves/ cliffs at every turn, listening to Sigur Ros. This could probably be considered a near death experience. It was however quite amazing.

"Pretty Little Ditty" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is best heard in the morning with sunshine streaming in the window. When I was fourteen I spent six weeks away from home for a summer program at a local university. I can still clearly remember getting ready for class in my dorm room and watching the sun break over the hills outside my window while I listened to that song. It's one of my favorite memories from that part of my life.

I just have to say that it's a horrible idea to drive in the middle of night through rural Pennsylvania with the second half of Tago Mago on. I nearly shit bricks listening to Peking O.
