Today is Record Store Day
So go out and support your local shops, if you're lucky enough to still have some. Living in Seattle, I feel pretty lucky to have so many cool shops around. There are 5 good ones within 10 miles of me. When I first moved here almost 3 years ago, there were probably about 8. So things have definitely changed, and I try to support them as much as I can. Though my disposable income isn't what it used to be, and often I can find better deals online. But I do try to go every few weeks to see what I can find, and avoid online shipping charges (I feel the $3 average for s+h is pretty high...though I do pay taxes instead when buying locally).
One of my favorite stores is offering 20% off everything today, except sale items. Maybe I can break away and find some good stuff, even though I was just there last weekend. So check your local stores' websites and see if they have any deals going on, or special events of some kind. Happy shopping! :hphones: RECORD STORE DAY - Home |
Ours are closed now. It's 8:30 P.M here!

I supported a distributor on ebay if that counts?
|
I would support mine more if it wasn't run by an ageing hippy who stocks far too many James Taylor & Alan Parsons Project albums than should be considered healthy.
|
This is a great idea...there are quite a few participating shops in my area, and a few places I hadn't heard of too that need to be checked out. Too bad it's pouring buckets outside and flooding all over the city, or else I might venture out. :(

We got one downtown browntown, and it just so happens it is right next to the local smoke shop. 2birds1stone

Jackhammer, I didn't realize you were in England. I'm guessing this is a US thing anyway. |
It says 'This Is England' underneath my avvy
I always support my local store and charity shops. HMV can go bollocks :D |
Right...but I didn't notice that until you said it was 8:30 where you are. ;)

i feel kinda lucky, the closest record shop is a block away and another one is about five. i'm not going today, but i don't feel bad, i spent like $35 there on thursday. |
Charity shops where you buy 2nd hand goods, are recycling and the money goes to charity- win all round.

There isn't a record store within 100 miles of where I live :(

My record store had 8 hours of live music and 3$ LP's. It was awesome.
EVERY BAND kicked some major ass. I didn't have a bunch of money, so I only got Explosions in the Sky's Those who tell the truth... and Stardeath & White Dwarfs' I Can't get away/ The Birth 7". Also, I met the Flaming Lips without even realizing it. They were surrounded by fangirls and they were asking them questions. When I walked by I heard one of them say, "lyk, omg, so what is your favorite Super Furry Animals album, I like Radiator the most hahahaha". Now, I didn't know they were talking to Wayne Conye, but I butted in and said, "I think Radiator is their most overrated piece of work, I like Love Craft the most". Wayne agreed and said that was one his favorites. The Fangirls got pissed at me. I didn't find out that I just met The Flaming Lips until 5 minutes after that. |
I hate people that treat musicians like super beings... especially fangirls.

There are still a few great ones here in the Philadelphia area. One in Princeton University campus area too. I miss browsing through record stores. It's great to be able to download or find anything you want online but it lacks the communal experience of record-browsing. The feeling of not knowing what you're gonna find or that treasure hunt feeling of searching for "The One" album or piece of Holy Grail you've been looking for. That's why I like flea markets and yard sales. Always good for old out-of-print albums and cds. Cassettes too. I still have my tape player.

Yeah, South Street gets kind of old. And did you notice they got rid of all the trees last year? Whose dumb idea was that? There's no shade all anywhere there now. There are still some good music stores in that area though, like the Record Exchange and the Relapse store. |
Yeah, I've seen a few of the others record stores. They're ok. For awhile I was going to Sound of Market at 11th & Market. They got a decent collection of cds but I haven't been there in years. You know who has a great music selection I go to now is Chester Books out in West Chester, PA. 202 South to Paoli Pike there's a big shopping center with a KMART. I get alot of stuff there. Discounts too.
Yeah, South Street sucks now. It's like being at the mall. Subway, Burger King, Gap, Dairy Queen. Very few mom & pop shops survived. They took forever with those trees. And no more parking meters. Got some weird Big Brother type machine like they do in NYC now. It would be funny if everybody started running to the 'burbs to get that old Philly feeling back haha. |
