Oh, What The F*ck?

There's probably been threads like this started before but whatever. If this needs to be merged, merge it if it needs to be locked, lock it.
So today in lass we started talking about music, and someone said "Pretty much all music today is about getting drunk or high or having sex"
I was pretty pissed off. I told her she was close-minded and needs to listen to something other then America's Top 40 songs before she makes a generalazation like that. Not like I got through to her though.
I'm sure you've all met people like this. Discuss?

right-track 04-23-2009 02:59 PM

What about a thread title change?

You should've asked her how that's any different from any other decade's pop music.

You should have karate-chopped her throat.

This.

Seriously sex is the life essence of popular music, in terms of subject matter and the motivation for even starting a f*cking band.

They provoke sex. With 13 year old girls. So the music is about sex. :finger:

Do you think she knows there are bands other than whats in the top 40?

People like that really bother me. She wouldn't know music if it bit her on the ass.

Alfred 04-23-2009 07:16 PM

On the topic of ignorant people, we're making top five lists in class, and my friend is doing "top five worst bands". He's putting my band in his list as a joke, and for number four he's doing Nickelback. He's like "hey, at least you're not as bad as Nickelback". Then this other guy is like "Yeah, but at least Nickelback writes their own songs", a stab at us because we cover songs. The total irony of this is that Nickelback started out as a cover band. But never mind this, what the fuck kind of a stab is that? Like, why don't you call out just about every other cover band? There's a difference between performing other people's material and recording it and releasing it as your own.

I prob would have gotten so angry and shot a fireball out of my palms while making a strange japanese sound.

Rage Against the Machine 04-23-2009 07:24 PM

People like that make me laugh more than anything. Some annoying ginger freshman always tries to give me Skillet and Slipknot CDs because he thinks we have similar taste in music.

I got a buddu just like, he knows I dont like korn at all, and every year or so he says hey man give em a listen and he'll drop me a link and say they have gotten so much better, but they havent.

Nice custom thing under your avy as well.

Surell 04-23-2009 09:01 PM

My friend the other day said I didn't have very good taste in music when she looked through my iPod. When I asked to point some out, she said first off, all the rap. That made me a little angry. It's like people think I'm a super poser that acts gangster while only listening to Tilly and the Wall or Between the Buried and Me or something.

But yeah, generalizing Rap is my button really.

That would be one hell of an useful skill.

What really annoys me is when people point out Soulja Boy as a reason to hate all rap/hip hop.

There was this too. Saying al lrap but down women and was about pimping and sh*t...ingnorance is bliss I guess.

I've come to realize that 99% of people outside of MusicBanter are just plain not worth talking to about music. Which is why I spend time here. Hell, just yesterday my roomate said anything with a drum machine is automatically bad. I raged.

Wow, that really sucks. The music scene in my town is close to none existent, but I've socialized and drank my ass off to meet the few people I've found. Ironically, none of which attend the college I do. I meet people at local shows all the time, but you're right - these folks are hard to come by. It's almost to the point where I'm overly excited when I meet someone of interesting taste in music and come off as a complete ass. Also, I can see where your roomate is coming from, but I don't put it off as terrible music. For example, Buckethead - drum machine galore, but the guy can rip.

Double X 04-24-2009 10:44 AM

Sorry, but nothing is more irritating than the pretentious wannabe shredders who drone on about Satriani and Malmsteen. I'd rather listen to someone slam on a whole genre than listen to two meatheads talk about some shredder.

I'm glad where I live, the music scene is pretty good. The music department at my highschool is extremely good, mostly because the thing is run by a small, but extremely dedicated group of people that make it into a great class. The people in the class have generally good taste in music, where they appreciate and enjoy a variety of music. I even know a few people that love bands like kayo Dot, Mr. Bungle, John Zorn (although so far they don't enjoy his music, but they are giving the man a chance and don't automatically jump to that "its not music" stuff). Don't get me wrong though, 90% of my school has the absoulte worst taste in music I have ever seen, completely with the stereotypical metal head that only listens to Slipknot, the gangster man who thinks Lil Wayne is the best rapper ever, The top 40s people, ect.

Just a few days ago, one of my classmates, who plays bass said that "any bassiest that uses a pick is a guitar player wannabe." Or even worse, when somebody says something like "you have to be on drugs to actually like or make that" when talking about a more experimental band.

Ugh, I hate that. My friend told me that once. When I was listening to The Blood Brothers. THE BLOOD BROTHERS.

True that. A lot of times they just cover their ears and start shouting metal lyrics too. Don't even try to hear some logic.

Yep.

I was talking to some girl the other night who told me she doesn't really listen to any bands and just whatever's on the charts. Fair enough I guess. I certainly couldn't see myself living like that though.

Those three things have kind of been a part of popular music...for...well, let's just say longer than you, me or your classmate have been alive.

Any way you go about it, it's an ignorant generalization.

This is my life right now down to a T. These two friends of mine both play guitar and rave about both of those guys, plus like Bonamassa. Stuff like that, at least to me, is just as generic and boring as listening to say, Nickelback (I try not to slam on Nickelback, but they're the best example of a generic formula band I can think of at the moment). I'm sure it's all technically amazing but to me it's just noise, there's no meaning to it.

Eww Skillet.

What's up with the thread title? Was the OP just trying to intentionally be offensive or something?

Anyways, this topic has been discussed thousands of times. Some people are going to explore music, some people are going to listen to boring, drab, accessible music.

Arya Stark 04-26-2009 05:46 PM

So yesterday, my family was all listening to a piece that Purcell wrote, because I wanted them to hear it.

Then my dad wanted to hear "Ave Maria." Okay. That's fine. Beautiful, actually.

Then my sister, the teeny bopper of the WORLD, goes, "YOU KNOW THAT SONG BY BRITNEY SPEARS?!"

T.T

Then we had to listen to half her fricken album. I just walked away. It was the saddest thing ever...
