khfreek made me a compilation for The Fall of Troy (see top of page 4).

Unfortunately I had trouble loading 3 of the songs into iTunes...for whatever reason they would not import no matter what I tried. So I only got to listen to 9 of the songs but it still provided a great overview of the band's sound. I'll play the other 3 songs in Windows Media Player one of these days.

So on to the music. I was quite surprised when I first started playing the compilation. I had this pre-conceived idea that The Fall of Troy were on the harder side of the post-hardcore genre, with some progressive influence. So this appealed to me quite a bit. I was expecting some relatively hardcore or deep vocals, some screaming and yelling perhaps, something kind of spastic but melodic. Musically I think that was quite accurate. But the vocals turned out to be more like those of Cedric from The Mars Volta and Claudio from Coheed and Cambria...much higher than I had anticipated. In fact the singing style, not just the voice, was very similar to those two bands. As a whole, The Fall of Troy sounds like a rougher, less produced, I guess more garage version of those two bands. Having been a fan of The Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria since 2002-2003, it's hard for me to really see this as a good thing. I still listen to TMV regularly and C&C occasionally, and respect both. A little bit of research revealed that The Fall of Troy has been around for this long also, so it would be unfair for me to call them copy-cats just because I wasn't aware of them at the time. Had I known about them back then, I probably would have really liked them as it was really those two bands that got me interested in progressive rock. And when I first get into a certain style I seek out similar-sounding bands. They would have fit the bill perfectly and in fact I may have liked them a bit more on a certain level for being more punk (rougher production, a bit more chaotic). But the fact is that I've been listening to TMV and C&C for 6-7 years now, and so a band that sounds that much like them doesn't quite wow me today.

I think they are talented and I did enjoy the music. It could even grow on me with enough listens, maybe they could even replace C&C since I don't listen to them that much anymore and was disappointed in their last album. I will keep my eye on The Fall of Troy to see where they go from here, and maybe check out one of their full albums soon. It was just hard for me to not think of TMV and C&C while listening to them, which is really the only thing that limited my enjoyment.

Thanks for the comp.

I remember when he released Gold, but I never bothered to get it. Might just have to check this one out.

I'm thinking "The Beginner's Guide To..." thread and this should be merged? Same concept.

This is more of a request thread whereas the Beginners guide is compilations just put out there without requests. Otherwise they are pretty much the same thing. All compilations on the forum will be collected and put in one place over the coming weeks.
