Lol, yeah I can see how that could be misconstrued, I didn't know you played bass boo2.

From what I've seen of his pictures, he looks like a bass player. With the beard and what not.

No. You're signed to a major label.

Doesn't stop most bands from being labelled indie.

none taken, i was actually thinking the same thing when i joined, but then the music really grew on me. now i have albums from bands that i never thought i'd be into. i still love all my music, but idk, things change i guess.

thats because it doesn't have **** to do with what label you're on.

Which makes it the most useless genre/classification in history. http://www.almost1337.com/mp3/aaron/monstersig.png

You apparently have never listened to "alternative..."

No, I believe it's 3. Yes, it's three.

RonaldSays 06-13-2009 07:59 AM

Alternative and indie are really bogus classifications. It means nothing. Although I use alternative myself sometimes to refer to my taste of music. But I guess it's just human to stick labels onto everything.

How is Alternative a "bogus" classification? Whoops, guess you missed the whole '90's' thing.

Norg 06-13-2009 12:32 PM

well i dont know yall good enough to tell

but every music fourm has its groups

Rap fantics

Heavy metal fantics

Hardcore/Screamo

Alt Rock people -this is usually the majority and some elitist

and people like me that like everything

Alfred 06-13-2009 12:34 PM

Thankfully we don't have asswipes that only like classic rock on this forum.

It's as bogus a label as indie is, and I was around in the 90s. It used to mean something (rock that wasn't mainstream, college rock basically) and then it became a mainstream genre and is still used to identify a lot of mainstream/top-40 radio stations. So it's completely meaningless now. Yeah we know what they mean, but it's no longer "alternative", it's mainstream. The "indie" label has suffered the exact same fate.

I don't like "everything" but I like some of every genre you posted, and then some.

I got driven away from the ultimate-guitar forum by people like that, I mean it's great for you to have the knowledge and respect for who came before and inspired artists you like, but their close-mindedness that nothing good has come out since 1976 is a little disturbing.

But does that make the term meaningless? It may be nonsensical sounding but that doesn't mean the term has become moot. It has just grown to describe the post-grunge sound of today's mainstream rock.

sidewinder 06-13-2009 12:48 PM

True, I wasn't really implying that it was meaningless. People know what it means when they hear it. Just that it's bogus in the sense that the meaning doesn't make sense anymore.

Gone Sugaring 06-13-2009 12:53 PM

Maybe I don't pay enough attention, but I've yet to come across a poster and think "They have an awful taste in music" Either I enjoy a lot of the same bands they do or I simply don't like a band they love, not that said band is terrible. I honestly think think the members here have a good taste in music. Or at least all the members I've come across.

IWP 06-13-2009 01:44 PM

Man, post-grunge needs to die already.

Anteater 06-13-2009 01:56 PM

Going to agree with sidewinder here; if post-grunge rock is played on a lot of mainstream radio stations, then what is it an "alternative" to?

Alfred 06-13-2009 01:58 PM

'zactly.

1. Initally great
2. Was my initial reaction wrong?
3. Wow this has grown a lot on me again, it's awesome!
Still it's not as good as Sleepy Sun, but you really can't expect it to be.

Just saw this...

I had about the same reaction as the first listen: Good psychedelic rock, but I'd still rather listen to Sleepy Sun. The album revealed itself as a little more 3 dimensional than I initially thought though, which was great.

Also I just noticed, our Last.fm compatibility is off the heezy. Pretty strange considering you hate Radiohead, and besides TMV and Nick Drake, we don't share a lot of high listens with any artist. Also, add me.

That's because forum posting on "the intranet" is a little past most 50-year-olds' comprehension of modern technology.

Alfred 06-13-2009 02:34 PM

Not even that, there's plenty of High School-aged, long-haired Zeppelin/ACDC fanatics that really get on my nerves.

jackhammer 06-13-2009 05:45 PM

I would say that if I had to judge MB members solely on their music tastes then I would like even less of you than I do now.

It's universally agreed upon that stuff like that isn't "real" alternative.

Muzak 06-14-2009 05:12 PM

Its been a while... all I remember is that:

Boo Boo has great taste and knowledge in prog and rock in general.

And that Jackhammer is awesome because he likes Metal and Ska/Reggae.

Seltzer is a great metal head.
