Wolfmother, TV on the Radio, Arctic Monkeys. |
The last 10 years... for me some of my personal favourites would have to be Karnivool or Cog. Also honorable mentions to The Cat Empire and Fat Freddy's Drop. These are just some of my choices.

Probably Coldplay, I'm not really a big fan, like some of their stuff but it doesn't really do it for me but no one can deny their success. In terms of what I'd like, last 10 years? I'd be inclined to go for Muse, if Kasabian keep on doing what they've been doing they might get a mention. Arctic Monkeys as well..
|
The White Stripes for me due to pure consistency. Runners up would be Mclusky/Andrew Falkous in general.

I don't know about who's the most skilled or the most original or whatever, but as far as the one band that I enjoy the most in the past ten years Underoath springs to mind. Although technically they formed in '98, but Acts of Depression came out in '99. Amazing how their sound evolved from pretty much death metal to what it is today. I have to say I like the Spencer Chamberlain stuff better, with Define the Great Line being my favorite, but the Dallas Taylor era stuff is starting to grow on me.
Speaking of Dallas Taylor, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster would be another one of the greats from the past 10 years. Pretty unique band/sound IMO. The Break Mission, The Pernice Brothers, Silverstein, and All That Remains are other all time favorites. :D |
I think I'll have to go with Liars on this one. First they pulled me in by releasing an album that sounded like everything that Gang of Four should've done but didn't after Entertainment. Then they proceeded to floor me with a series of releases that sound both old and new at once and all sound very different from each other while somehow still also sounding like a cohesive whole. Fantastic band.

Gojira are one of the few Metal bands to have their own unique sound and be as heavy as hell, technically brilliant and completely eschew the whole metalcore sound.
Fat Freddy's Drop make some of the most sensual and groovy music I have heard in a long while. They also have the musical chops to match. It's a pity that Pig Destroyer miss out by just 2 years. That band is frigging awesome. |
1. Pain of Salvation
2. The White Stripes 3. Coheed and Cambria 4. World's End Girlfriend 5. The Mars Volta |
Can't be bothered to think of a full list for the moment, so I'll half-answer the thread's question in the medium of song and dance...

I'll go with Kylesa.

Karnivool. Nuff said.

@mr dave and sidewinder:
Haven't heard the crank2 soundtrack. If we're talking about the same Crank, I don't think I want to check it out. I think Jason Statham is ****ing terrible. As for Mit Gas, I'd say it's definitely worth checking out again, mr dave. It took me a few listens to start getting into it. I've not listen to Anonymous too much, so I just downloaded it. And Fantomas - another album? I can't wait. Their work reminds me of no other. Patton surely gets overrated, but let's face it - the man is kind of a genius. @jaha You listed Gojira AND Fat Freddys Drop? How can I say this in any other way but fuck yes. I might just have to agree with you with this decision ... 95%. Only because I'm indecisive when it comes to such a general question as this thread. |
I know they are much older than 10 years, but since their debut album was released in 2003. I'm gonna go with "Darkness"
It's a cheap copy of 60's and 70's rock, but in modern times it sounds so original... |

Wow this is really hard, there's so many choices if I could start in 1998. Mice Parade is unique and original, and their discography is diverse so they're always fun to listen to. Dalek is ****ing great, same with DOOM. However, all of these artists formed in 1998.
For the last 10 years, my personal favorites (not considering best in terms of influence or popularity: Animal Collective Dirty Elegance put out two fantastic albums Alias is dank Defiance, Ohio Gorillaz School of Seven Bells (though they've only released one album) The Shins The Unicorns kicked ass, they weren't around long but they were damn good. |

as for crank2, sidewinder totally sums it up. i think statham was perfect for the role. then again i was also thoroughly entertained by terminator 3, once you stop giving a crap about how a movie is sold to the public and just watch it for how you see it, things improve significantly. T3 = parody. crank2 = mindless action. statham = mindless action hero. i didn't see the first movie either, don't think it really mattered. |
Fat Freddy's Drop. Definitely.
|
Gotta confess, I'm not a huge fan of Mike Patton or Fat Freddy's Drop. I have never listened to Tomahawk though, maybe they're good. As for Fat Freddy's Drop, they're decent but lots of people here seem to be in love with them. Not me.
|
in the past 10 years?
anything jack white related. or anything ryan adams related. in my opinion they are the best advocates for cosmic american music. |
Old Time Relijun.
And yes I know they formed in 1995. The title of the thread was best bands to come out in the last 10 years, not form in the last 10 years. |

Unicorns/Islands
Fiery Furnaces The Shins Air France One of those. I think Air France has made the most amazing music, but so far they've only released two EPs worth of music, so that makes them a tougher pick. |
I have to say I'm astonished that we've gone 8 pages and I'm the only person who's mentioned Liars in this thread.
|
I don't think they sound anything alike but i've not really heard much of The Microphones stuff.
Old Time Relijun are much more abrasive & there's a huge Beefheart influence. |
ANY genre? Replies to this post result in little more than opinion if you're including all genres.
My opinion: The Shins or Death Cab for Cutie or White Stripes or something, but that leaves out a bunch of goodies. |
Quote:
Death Cab had 2 releases out before 2000; The Shins only released one EP in 98 before their first album in 2001, so they probably count...and I like them a lot too. The White Stripes released a few singles in 98 and their debut album in 1999. Well **** actually it's 2009 now so technically last 10 years includes 99...bah I don't know. :D |
Bandits of the Acoustic revolution anyone?
Possibly Leftover Crack. |
