I've listened to this song for over 30 years and I still can't figure out what it's about. Can anyone?

Oh god what a song. Probably my favorite Leonard Cohen song. It's from the perspective of a man who believes that he does not need other people in his life ("When I am on a pedestal/ you did not raise me there") but then realizes that this is not entirely true ("I have begun to ask for you/ I who have no need").

Beyond that, I can't really say.
