What sort of music are you listening to?

Hi i wonder if you could help me?
im currently doing a research assessment in media at school and we're sposed to be doing about what music people are into.
so i wondered if you could answer these questions for me ;
what sort of music are you into at the moment and why?
does the media influence what artists you like as in when there in the papers, magazines does it draw your attention to or away from them?
thanks c:

Generally speaking, my three favourite genres are probably folk (Bod Dylan, Fleet Foxes), indie rock (Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire), and "classic" rock (Beatles, Bowie, Television), but specifically my taste runs the gamut pretty wide. Recently I've been getting into a lot of old-school and mostly unknown or "alternative" hip-hop (De La Soul, Arrested Development, Cee-lo, MURS, The Roots, etc.). That was not influenced by the media. I seem to agree with critics about 70% of the time, so I do use scores at Metacritic as a sort of recommendation source, but that's about much as say the media has when it comes to what I listen to.

Trance, Hardstyle, Electro, Black Metal, and Alternative. My tastes don't change much. As for the media correlation between what I like and what's on the radio? There's no link at all. I hate pop and haven't listened to the radio for a couple years

Currently listening to Lou Reed's ambient improv "The Creation Of The Universe" 2CD ... fairly typical of my taste, I guess ... I also listen to rocknroll, country, jazz (reading about John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" this morning), funk and whatever else is around. I make use of independent media to find things that will interest me, but I don't listen to the radio or watch television. As a working musician, a lot of what I listen to is dictated by its relevance to my current aesthetic pursuit, or as a diversion to it ... my personal taste varies with the time of day, my mood, the weather, who's around, and the background noise of my immediate environment

Don't know how much help this will be but I listen to a lot of Punk Rock and recently Hardcore Rap music. I also enjoy pop but don't often look toward media for information about new music.

i've rekindled my love for early 90s shoegaze / dream pop. particularly the group Medicine. i also can't stop listening to the last Tortoise album (Beacons of Ancestorship).

as for media attention. i haven't bought or seriously considered a music magazine in about 10 years. sites like this and the discussions contained within are what influence my listening habits.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Singer-songwriter/folk both male and female musicians. I normally and still do listen to a lot of Alternative and Indie Pop/Indie Rock

Lots of meditative relaxation music. Good for sleeping and calming down. Healing Therapy Music and Dr Jeffery Thompson at the moment.

Odly enough when im not listening to that its the exact opposite. Dom/stoner metal with detuned distorted guitars :) I uess I like covering both end of the spectrum for a more balanced feel.

As far as media goes, websites like Pandora, Live 365, and Last FM have a huge say in what I listen to. Depending on what I see similar users liking ill often check it out.

Different things I like to think, but at the core - probably prog, hard rock and a bit of metal. Examples are bands/artists like Gentle Giant, Yes, Frank Zappa, Deep Purple, Boston, Dio and Megadeth.

ruth, there is a potential problem with your study though ;) Asking here might be a good way to get answers, but what sort of people is it you want to ask? That might be something you wanna ask yourself before you start. The people here and their tastes my not reflect that of the general public in the area you come from. Our community makeup is not random either, it's mostly teenagers and people in their early 20s who are perhaps likely to be more explorative and diverse with our interest in music than the average person in your community.

I'm guessing it's not that important in your study (I guess you're not exactly doing science), but it's good to at least be aware of :D
