Death Cab For Cutie's Narrow Stairs always sounds like a winter album to me. Same goes for Explosions In The Sky's newest album, and the 'The Cold Part/Alone Down There/Stars Are Projectors' portion of Modest Mouse's The Moon And Antarctica.

It's an incredible album, very underrated. My favorite from the album - the most winter song of all: |
I'm still working through some of the recommendations given here. I find post-rock is great winter music personally, so I've been listening to a lot of that. Can't beat jazz as soon as the sun has gone down though, perfect early evening music when it's dark. Not sure I've ever listened to jazz in the day come to think of it. Winter = more dark = more jazz! So yeah, a few more wintery albums that haven't been mentioned, in my opinion:
Mogwai - Young Team http://www.coldheartprojects.com/ima...Young_Team.jpg Biosphere - Substrata http://static.boomkat.com/images/69023/333.jpg M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us http://www.betweenplanets.co.uk/Art/...e_The_Dawn.jpg |
St Vincent-Actor
Antony and The Johnsons are ONLY listenable during winter. |
Arab Strap-The Red Thread.
|
Agalloch _ ashes against the grain... I feel as though The Mantle is more of a Fall album.
|
I'd say Meddle by Pink Floyd is a great one as well.
|
Just getting into this:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2202/...6508cc89dc.jpg It's deep, heavy and atmospheric without falling into any of the cliches associated with the genre. It's not Electronica and it's not metal but it somehow bridges the gap between both genres. Astonishing. |
Sorry 2 years late but important mentions, Eddie Vedder - Into The Wild OST
|
Pink Floyd's - A momentary lapse of reason - :)

M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts I just happened to be listening to this right now and I think it's an album that sounds great in winter, more so than Before The Dawn Heals Us which was mentioned already in the thread. It's largely instrumental compared to later works and the soundscapes have a nice winter feel. |
Le Lendemain - Fires
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TSC8nsgsqk...2009-cover.jpg Lüüp - Meadow Rituals http://hiteek.com/wp-content/uploads...Nak225348.jpeg |
This is always the time of year for me to bust out For Emma, Forever Ago.
|
Auburn Lull - Alone I Admire
One of my favourite winter albums. |
Off the top of my head,
Cage's Hell's Winter Apathy's Eastern Philosophy Apathy has a great track called The Winter that I like to play when its cold. "The trees look so wicked with no leaves in it, got to run the car for like 15 minutes" or some such. "It's the season where Timbalands replace our sneakers" |
CLICK THE LINKS!
Dream Letter by Tim Buckley is pretty good winter music. Though the song I linked is on the album, the video is a different version. Rejoicing in the Hands by Devandra Banhardt is a good 'burrow' album and anything where Chet Baker sings is a good depressing winter experience. For some reason posting the youtube videos is not working for me today which is why Ive linked them instead. It's probably because of the computer I'm using (not my usual). |
