Top Bands That Became Famous Overnight

I am trying to find out which bands became big relatively quickly. By this I mean that they had limited musical background and ended up becoming big fast, or is this just some rumor that bands make it big overnight?

Stone Birds 10-26-2009 06:32 AM

it's mostly a rumor, but it can be true in the sense that after a band has had their first TV appearance, they became more popular (seemingly "overnight").

Depends.Loads of band make it as soon as they release any music at all.

TheBig3 10-26-2009 09:33 AM

The only band I'd believe this may have happened to is "Audiovent" because they were all related to incubus, who were blowing up at the time and thusly probably got a contract based on the draft.

Otherwise I can't think of a band who threw it together and really went to #1 save for maybe GnR who weren't overnight, but were pretty damned fast.

Arctic Monkeys jump to my mind as fast as the speed in which they reached their success

loveissucide 10-26-2009 12:57 PM

As do Oasis.

Fintroll 10-26-2009 02:25 PM

There was a band named mayham that got big pretty fast. But then they had some kind of murder scandle and tanked or something I don't know.

Well there are plenty of one-hit-wonders that get famous instantaneously, but they always seem to die down eventually. Soulja Boy is one that comes to mind. I knew nothing about it and then one day everyone was singing it. But that might just be due to my un-hipness:p:

Fintroll 10-26-2009 02:42 PM

Soul-ja boy did come and go pretty quickly but I think its because he really wasen't all that talented.

Pillowmint 10-26-2009 06:27 PM

The story of Soulja Boy is a sad one IMO...

At my school, we had a weeklong field trip. On the first day, on the bus ride someone played Crank That very loudly, and everyone seemed to love it (Not me, i hated that song from the beginning), and it was only earlier that day that I had even heard of this guy. A week later, we came home, and the same kid played the same song, and everyone yelled at him to turn it off.

We were in the woods most of the week, and did not have access to music except on the bus.

Pillowmint 10-26-2009 06:29 PM

Oh, and about Mayhem, yes there was a murder. And some churchburnings, and possibly cannibalism. I don't really know what you mean by getting "big", since that was pretty much against what they stood for, but they have had a huge influence on black metal and are still going at it. I think their lineup is completely different from what it was in the beginning.

Airbourne. They came outta nowhere and now are one of the toasts of the Metal town.

Honestly there's some stuff that Pitchfork reviews that is very obscure or new, and then all of a sudden there's a 7.5 review or best new music review on Pitchfork and everyone and their mother is listening to it. Of course it's not completely overnight, but it could definitely appear that way if you don't follow the type of music they review much.

CanwllCorfe 10-26-2009 07:34 PM

Matt & Kim

Raditz 10-26-2009 10:17 PM

I was simply trying to get an idea about it. I realize most of the time it is a perception that a group blows up over night, yet in reality they didnt. Thanks guys!

Antonio 10-27-2009 03:12 AM

Panic! at the Disco.

Pete Wentz found their myspace and signed them BEFORE THEY EVEN PLAYED A SINGLE SHOW

Perfect example right there. Now if they could just do the same thing with better bands...
