Honestly, I think the 00's has been a pretty damn amazing time in music for people who actually know how to search for stuff. The radio is going to suck no matter what decade you live, but there is plenty out there for those who truly love seeking out new sounds.
The perks of this particular decade don't end there though. Production quality in studio is at a peak, there's a fair amount of creativity in various genres (young & old alike), and bands on the whole are making more of an effort to connect to their audiences than they have in the past thanks to the Internet and outgrowth of associated social media. In truth, we are living in a rather industrious and amazing decade, and if you aren't finding something to like then it's probably an issue on your part rather than the actual content out there. :tramp: |
The mainstream is kinda eh.. but the electro stuff that started evolving I really liked

Biggest problem for me in the past decade I can't think of one truly unique band that has come along. Everything seems to be in trends. One minute it's garage rock, then it's folky indie, then it's nu rave, then it's 80s retro. Nobody seems to want to stand out & be different.
It's all very well saying there's still good music out there you have to look for it and you ignore the mainstream. I've been pretty much doing that for the last 10 years and it's not just the mainstream that's at fault. I see it everywhere from the highest corporate record companies to the indiest of indie blogs. Bands just happy to go along with the flow and not have any staying power at all. If I had to rate this decade i'd give it a 5/10 Must try harder. |
Not as hard as you are...
OT: Love this decade...music just keeps getting better...*happysigh* |
The same as every other decade- good and bad. I couldn't give two hoots what the radio will play regarding this decade in ten years time as it will be generally mainstream and not a good barometer of what's truly out there.
I do agree with Urban in many respects that we have so many more trends than usual this decade and the current penchant for recycling 80's synth music is laughable as 90% of it was bad enough in the first place. I think the metal scene out of France has been particulary good over the last few years with bands declining to opt for a generic Nu Metal groove and adopt more progressive elements. The Japanese scene has been as healthy as ever with many Noise Rock/Post Rock bands blowing may of their English speaking counterparts away and of course the music scene down under which has seen a shedload of great Dub/Reggae/Funk/DnB bands that are genuinely fun to listen to and should be bigger in the mainstream but it's not particularly new. How much more originality is out there? I think Electronic music is the last bastion of originality with an endless scope for experimentation. |

People are mixing things up and doing new things to old genres, everything is getting more polished. I feel I've heard little really new, it's more mixing things up in new ways. It's not that I hear nothing new by the way, just much less compared to other decades and what was new then. I agree a bit with Urban, most of the 00s music I've heard sounds pretty safe. However, I also agree with Anteater in the points he's making. People are mixing things up, production quality is often very high and bands seem to have more connection with their fans. I'm not saying it's a horrible decade. It's when I compare it with others that I find it less exciting. As I wrote before, I think the pop music has on average had a much higher quality this decade than last .. and come on, of course popular culture is important in how we view a decade. ;) |
I dont know if i can ever go back to when music was new and beautiful to me i guess im just too jaded. this decade sucked and the worst part is its not over yet

Oh and Tore I'll just ask about it here, if I start posting reviews again in my journal will you approve them? I figure you didn't yet to wait and see if I was gonna put up anything worthwhile. |
The people that want to find this or any other decade as bad will do so no matter what we say. Some people are just extremely close minded. This, just like every other decade, has it's highs and lows. Admittedly the mainstream has gotten worse, but anyone that bases their opinion on the mainstream is an idiot to begin with.

im an idiot. please enlighten me
as opened minded as the next |
