How do you prefer to listen to music (Ex. Mp3 player, Stereo, Car, etc.)? Live is always the best way to listen to music but generally I prefer vinyl. 9. Where do you go to buy your music? Record stores like Sonic Boom 10. How much do you spend monthly on average on Music? It probably averages out to like 11$ 11. Do you prefer to buy just songs or full albums? Full albums. Why do you pirate music? Its really easy to do and free. 16. How many songs do you think you have pirated? Currently I sit at about 1000 17. Do you feel guilty about pirating music? Not in the least bit 18. Do you know the affect that piracy has on the music industry? Actually no, thats why im doing this survey. 19. Are you up to date on piracy laws? Up to date enough... 20. Do you think pirating affects artists in a major way? I think it actually helps artists because its an easier method of distribution. 21. Are there any positive sides to pirating? Its revolutionizing the way we consider music to be an industry. 22. What are the negatives to pirating? Artists don't get enough money for their work. 23. Does pirating in your opinion affect the cost of purchasing music? Cost of albums have definately raised in my opinion due to pirating. 24. Do you think that it is fair to pirate when people purchase music? Yes. As I said earlier, there are pirates and chumps. 25. Do your Parents, Grandparents, or Guardians pirate? If they were young enough to know how to properly they totally would. |

Heavily varies 11. Full albums always 12. Yes 13. Blogs 14. Yes 15. Some is impossible to find, I listen to too much to pay for all of it. 16. A lot... we'll leave it at that. 17. No 18. Yes 19. No 20. Yes 21. Lots. A lot of the music I download I would never find if I only went to stores to find it. Blogs introduce people to all sorts of music that would otherwise probably remain obscure and unknown, sometimes making artists quite famous. If it's a major label, you get to give a big **** you to some record company executives. 22. Takes money away from artists, of course. This is where it gets confusing. The question is, would people buy all of the music that they pirate? Definitely not, so it really results in no loss of profit for them as long as people spend as much money as they would have anyway on music (I do). 23. Eh, I doubt it 24. Yes 25. No |

Are there any positive sides to pirating? Obviously you can become a fan of an artist you might not have heard othewise. It's happened to me more times that I can count. 22. What are the negatives to pirating? It's too easy to do, and some people only DL and never buy I guess. Even when they'll say they are big fans of the artist. 23. I've also seen artists try to make their albums more attractive lately though, with cool bonus's like raised/unique cd covers, bigger booklets, t-shirts thrown in with purchases, etc. Which is pretty cool too. 24. The landscape is so flooded with artists now compared to before the internet, you have to be more selective when it comes to purchases 16. How many songs do you think you have pirated? Too many 17. Yes, it helps artists get discovered that would otherwise have no audience, and hurts mainstream artists that make crap music. 19. Are you up to date on piracy laws? No 20. Yes, as stated in #18, it helps artists get discovered that would otherwise have no audience 22. What are the negatives to pirating? Many people don't purchase after downloading. They use it as their only method of acquiring music. They don't care about physical products, so once they've downloaded a digital file, they see no reason to pay for the same file tehy already have. 23. Does pirating in your opinion affect the cost of purchasing music? In a way, it has reduced the cost of music ever so slightly because labels need to make purchasing at least somewhat attractive or fewer and fewer people will buy. 24. Do you think that it is fair to pirate when people purchase music? I don't think it's really fair, to be honest, but I don't get upset at people who only download. I've personally spent thousands and thousands (and thousands!!!) of dollars on music since my teen years, and kids these days are grabbing everything for free. I think it's fine to sample before you buy and think artists/labels should provide a way for consumers to do so prior to purchasing, so everyone doesn't just run to download it (because as I said before, once somebody has the digital file there is very little incentive for them to go purchase it unless they're after the physical product). So while I believe we should be able to preview, better methods of doing so should be put into place. Previewing any CD of choice at the record store, going to the artist's website and streaming, etc. Anything to reduce the download of actual mp3 files without purchase. 25. Do your Parents, Grandparents, or Guardians pirate? They probably only have the slightest idea what an MP3 is. But they do make copies of CDs for each other. |
