Holy ****, I just realized why I hardly ever listen to Carly Rae Jepsen. I never had any reason before, other than that she just hadn't taken my brain over yet like she has with everyone else. I liked her at first, and was excited to listen to more, but I just never ended up doing that. And I never knew why.
BUT NOW!!! I think I've got it. The schticky, 80s sound pallette on EMOTION is bland and lifeless. The production is partly to blame. It's clearly meant to evoke some kind of flashy, slick, plastic, 80s nightlife vibe, but ends up just feeling kinda sparkly, too plasticky, and distant. Even Carly's squeaky vocals just add to this. It's like the whole album is laminated to prevent you connecting with it.
So there. I don't give a **** about Carly Rae Jepsen and you people are idiots.
EMOTION is decent for what it is, but there's so many other artists doing the retrovivalist 80's pop thing better (Ice Choir, Grimes, The Midnight, other people across the synthwave spectrum, etc.) that it doesn't stand out like it might have otherwise.
Plus you can also find lots of stuff like this on YT that's infinitely more fulfilling for 80's fanatics like me.
