I love The Residents' song Lizard Lady from the album Duck Stab :) Like so many of their great songs, it's creepy and sorta funny at the same time!

I remember my ex thought listening to this song felt like going crazy. :p:

edit :

I also like this short tune & video!

Electrophonic Tonic 01-03-2012 07:50 PM

Heard this today. Reminds me of the Gorgut's Obscura, except noisier, darker and 20x more horrifying. Apparently their live shows are the same as the video.

^I find I'm hard to impress when it comes to horrifying. It often becomes over the top, like a movie that tries too hard. It's like if I feel too obvious that someone's trying to scare me, I think of it perhaps as contrived and get a little defensive. For me, I think it's generally better to use slightly more subtle ways to scare. If someone manages to sneak the scares past me, perhaps by appealing to some musical interest, it may be more effective.

Here's a remake of the Werner Herzog Nosferatu trailer I did a little while ago . . . kinda scary

** hmm, how do you embed something here?

Like so. Take the URL, and cut the code at the end, placing it in the youtube tags.

Sweet vid, by the way.

I was about to complain about the lack of Swans on such a list then I saw beautiful child.

However, that is far from one of their scariest works. The crushing, nihilistic sounds of their earlier industrial styles are perfect for this. Also, the tracks from their Soundtracks For The Blind album rabge from the deeply unsettling to the downright terrifying.

While we're posting scary vids, can I get everyone's views on what makes music 'scary' to them?

Guybrush 01-04-2012 09:43 AM

This might seem a little random, and it's not music exactly, but a media experience which creeped me out quite a bit that I remember was when I played through Max Payne. There's a sequence in the game where you're in one of Max's nightmares. You have to navigate through this darkness, following a bloody trail, hoping to get to your child's room before your wife and kid gets brutally murdered.

The creepy thing was that while following this blood trail in the darkness, you hear a baby crying and the crying gets so intense (particularly on headphones!). There are times when the loud wailing doesn't sound entirely human anymore which fits the surrealism of the dream.

I'm sure this was more impressive back then. Today, it might feel more like a dated video game, but I thought it quite effective back then. ;)

Just the general sound to them can be foreboding or distressing to the mind to hear.

Holy ****, ever since I played these levels, I've been trying to find things similar to this (music-wise esp.) :D

Honestly, I have never been this freaked out by a video game before.
The music and ambiance mixed with those disturbing images are burned into my mind.

Seriously I dare anyone to find me music that is more horrifying than these nightmares.

Everyone listen to Gnaw Their Tongues.

I just put on Reigns' The Widow Blades, and I must admit it's the most unsettling album I've listened to in a while

There's always something oddly unsettling when it comes to number stations, especially "The Swedish Rhapsody".

See the part in bold? That's the video ID. All you have to do is post that in between the brackets.

All you have to do is copy paste the link now and it will show up as a video. that's what I've been doing

Here's another goody. Can you imagine yourself singing along to this? It would probably scare away everyone in the vicinity.

TockTockTock 01-15-2012 04:13 PM

The Second Annual Report (1977) by Throbbing Gristle is by the far one of the scariest albums I have ever listened to. I had actually listened to it the other night, and it triggered a very disturbing, horrific, and grotesque dream after I fell asleep.

Highly recommended. :)

Godflesh—"Almost Heaven (Helldub)"
The fact that this is the "helldub" of this song really is pretty appropriate. I've always thought that this track has a strong descent into the abyss kind of flavor to it.

slatesphanboi 01-15-2012 10:56 PM

This song is hella' creepy, for like historical reasons.

Quote:

The main riff is constructed with a harmonic progression including a diminished fifth.[2] This particular interval is often known as diabolus in musica,[3] for it has musical qualities which are often used to suggest Satanic connotations in Western music.[3][4][5] The song "Black Sabbath" was one of the earliest examples in heavy metal to make use of this interval,[3] and since then, the genre has made extensive use of diabolus in musica.[3][6]
