I don't think every thread has to be master-planned. An idea came about from another thread, a new thread was started and it's a worthy discussion. Done.

I was 16 in 1991 and I was into the usual alternative rock bands at the time. I won't choose a favorite but I can make a list of favorites from a year of so many good albums. And I'll even limit this to favorite albums that I was actually listening to in 1991:

Loveless by MBV
Sebadoh III
The Pod by Ween
Gish by Smashing Pumpkins
Trompe le Monde by Pixies
and, yes, Nevermind by Nirvana

I'll be happy to do it if you'll give me the list of bands.

Unless of course you want me to make up my own list. :D

In order.

Not much to say, I just adore this album and I know that contradicts my passionate hatred for everything indie but whatever.

Not as big of a Nirvana nut as a used to be, a few years ago and this would have been number one.

Urban and Right Track deserve the credit for getting me interested in this album, an genius mix of house, psychedelia and Sticky Fingers era Stones. A very unique band for sure.

A band everyone loves to hate, I dunno why, even if you don't like Pearl Jam, they have always struck me as a band that genuinely love what they do and have a strong connection enough connection with their fans they don't feel the need to promote themselves the way most bands do, doing music videos, commercials and what not. They have retained their dignity much longer than other bands from their era, that's worth something. Anyway, they have a lot of good albums but this will always be their peak for me.

Well, this was the list but I don't know if a poll is necessary. I'll let you decide. :)

The list:

Achtung Baby - U2
Badmotorfinger - Soundgarden
Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge - Mudhoney
Gish - Smashing Pumpkins
Goat - The Jesus Lizard
Green Mind - Dinosaur Jr.
Leisure - Blur
Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
Mental Jewelry - Live
Mr. Bungle - Mr. Bungle
My Brain Hurts - Screeching Weasel
Nevermind - Nirvana
No Pocky for Kitty - Superchunk
Out of Time - R.E.M.
Pocket Full of Kryptonite - Spin Doctors
The Reality of my Surroundings - Fishbone
Sailing the Seas of Cheese - Primus
Screamadelica - Primal Scream
Steady Diet of Nothing - Fugazi
Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog
Ten - Pearl Jam
Trompe Le Monde - Pixies
Wretch - Kyuss

I'd say I made a pretty good list...

Rickenbacker 02-20-2010 12:21 PM

Some of those are pretty meh, honestly... Spin Doctors? Live? No real sense including them imo.

PFoK was a pretty good album. I thought any how.

Rickenbacker 02-20-2010 03:10 PM

It came off as pretty soulless funk/rock to me. Especially the singles.

I can see how it would sound that way to someone hearing them for the first time now, but back in the early 90s they were pretty good relative to the pop music of the time.

My top 4 from 1991

http://img.noiset.com/images/album/m...ver-25646.jpeg
1. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UHfhm5_IRd...blue-lines.jpg
2. Massive Attack - Blue Lines

http://repairtech.seesaa.net/image/s...pkins-gish.jpg
3. The Smashing Pumpkins - Gish

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...e5b13/1977.jpg
4. Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque

Honourable mentions:
Spacemen 3 - Recurring, Slowdive - Just For A Day, Nirvana - Nevermind, Chapterhouse - Whirlpool, Dinosaur Jr. - Green Mind, Pearl Jam - Ten.

1991 wasn't a bad year.

Rickenbacker 02-20-2010 04:24 PM

As much as I love Blue Lines, I hardly think it's "Alternative Rock"

mr dave 02-20-2010 04:25 PM

so i've thought about it a bit more and rather than make lists like so many others i'm going to split this choice two ways.

at the time - back in 1991 it was ALL about Blood Sugar Sex Magic.

at the present - it's a toss up between Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger and Mr. Bungle's self titled.

Sh!t yeah you're probably right. I only just glanced at the thread title and posted my favourite albums from 1991. Didn't see the 'alternative' bit :)

I didn't remember this is from '91. It goes in my list for sure. All the best alternative/shoegaze/britpop/whatever came out '89 - '92 so it's hard to keep mental track of specific release years.

Okay, I just spent a a little while trying to think of some and it seemed like almost every single album I thought of turned out to either be from 90 or 92 when I looked it up. Nevertheless here are ten favorites of mine from 91, not sure if they all really count as "alternative rock" but oh well:

Chris Connelly—Phenobarb Bambalam
Pigface—Gub
Godflesh—Slavestate
Mr. Bungle—s/t
My Bloody Valentine—Loveless
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult—Sexplosion!
Primus—Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Rocket from the Crypt—Paint as a Fragrance
Siouxsie and the Banshees—Superstition
Swans—White Light from the Mouth of Infinity

lucifer_sam 02-21-2010 10:24 AM

Someone else probably mentioned these already but as it stands these are my top 4:

1. Drive Like Jehu - Drive Like Jehu
http://www.rftc.com/old/discography/...d/jehu-dlj.jpg

2. Swans - White Light from the Mouth of Infinity
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TSxXUm0_hP...s400/cover.jpg

3. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kzIYVFMaGQ...-+Loveless.jpg

4. Scratch Acid - The Greatest Gift

Slint - Spiderland

Never got big into Red Hot Chili Peppers and as much as I love Mr. Bungle, Disco Volante is my favourite album by them. I did have a summer love affair with the Smashing Pumpkins when I was 16, but after I started realizing how much of a control freak Billy Corgan was, my opinion of the band started to wane, however if I did have to pick a favourite album Gish would be number 2 (hehe), because of songs "Siva" and "Rhinoceros". In fact "Rhinoceros" was my favourite song to play when I use to busk at Lonsdale Quey in North Vancouver. Anyways, this album may be less than a month old in my collection but I can already see why this band is so highly regarded. Very skilled musicianship and a modest aura that seems to encompass the band. I wish they put out more than two albums, but I am incredibly happy with what was put out by them. Also nobody else has mentioned it...

I agree this is great but I don't really think it counts since it's just a collection of two LPs and an EP from the 80s and Scratch Acid was already broken up by 91.

clutnuckle 02-22-2010 03:21 PM

Spiderland, Loveless and Mr. Bungle's self-titled off the top of my head.

I support that one being banned on the grounds of how fucking ugly it is. :p:

Yea - it's kind of hard to believe. Unless were talking about 'banned from K Mart' or something that album cover is pretty tame compared to a lot of albums released in '91.

Odyshape 07-16-2010 09:19 PM

Oh jeeze I think I may be the only one who didn't like loveless.

boo boo 07-16-2010 09:38 PM

A lot of these are great choices but I still don't get the appeal of Spiderland at all, every time I try to give it another chance I'm bored out of my wits.

keith! 07-16-2010 10:34 PM

Spiderland is without a doubt my favourite from 1991. It was one of those albums that actually changed my life when i heard it.

Loveless and Screamadelica are runners up

GravitySlips 07-16-2010 10:49 PM

its gawnae huv tae be SPIDERLAND!

Charlemagne 07-16-2010 11:16 PM

Heavenly- Heavenly vs. Satan, The Field Mice- For Keeps. I don't have any of the well respected, well liked alternative rock albums of 1991.

DoctorSoft 07-16-2010 11:20 PM

Easily Loveless, but I still need to listen to Spiderland.

Odyshape 07-18-2010 12:26 AM

Was thee headcoats Beach Bums Must Die album released 1991 or 1990?

downwardspiral 07-18-2010 02:30 AM

Loveless

Seltzer 07-18-2010 08:44 AM

If I had to choose one, it would be this... few bands are as compellingly introspective and nihilistic as Swans.

Dayvan Cowboy 07-18-2010 09:51 AM

Oh, definitely spiderland. That album is epic. it started two of my favorite genres, math rock and post rock.
with out slint, there would be no don caballero or battles or mogwai :S

Necromancer 07-19-2010 06:05 PM

This would probably be my vote as well or at the very least one of my top picks.

May be one of my favorites by the Smashing Pumpkins. I like how someone said on this forum in some thread that Billy Corgan's music was best when he had hair and as he progressivley lost hair his albums started sucking. I kind of agree with that statement.
