Off the top of my head: Buddy Holly. That was in the 50s.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, Phil Spector.
Pop or not, they were great. They were innovative and obviously extremely influential. Give me some songs from Holly and Spector that contain those influences.

I am just accustomed to "pop" being used as a derogatory term. Its a very broad term, so many bands can be considered pop.

Their greatness and level of innovation are debatable but as one of the most popular musical acts of the past century they certainly had a big influence on pop music.

Hmmm... that sounds suspiciously like an order. Why don't you just try googling them? Phil Spector made a career out of producing "wall of sound music" like that (and also produced the Beatles' Let It Be later on in his career). Buddy Holly was moving in that direction in the late 50s, shortly before his death, as evidenced by his last few singles.

It is a very broad term. Just about everything I listen to contains elements of pop, if it's not a straight up pop sub-genre. You don't have to worry about it being used as an insult around here.

When you try to make a point, it's usually good to provide proof to support your point, especially if you want to convince anyone that you are right. And i never said they were THE first, I said they were one of the first.
