You should check out Death Grips or Tool, they are both very mysterious.

Well if we do ever break out of this "music rut", it'll be interesting to see how people would describe this all in a few decades. Yet the habit itself, of constantly discussing the past, will hopefully become more obscured/less desired.

What rut? Music is currently at its most decentralized and diverse right now.

I think he's talking about pop music and how it hasn't really changed all that much for the last 5-10 years. If not, I'm confused to.

I get the notion that music was "better" from a lot of people around me, and it's one of the only times I get antagonistic about music. It's like saying "Hey, I can't be bothered to take an hour out of the week to look for something new that I might like". It shows an annoying willfull ignorance, and I just wish these people would go away.

I'm not is a position to say whether artists are more or less talented. I will say they probably rely on technology a lot more. Mainly because there is a lot more technology to rely on. They can do more with less. Less people involved and less time in the studio which saves money and the dudes in the suits who have no clue about the tunes control the purse strings.

I personally think all this technology does make the music a bit too polished for my audio taste buds.

Good point.

Maybe it’s time for the word budget to replace lo-fi. At least in that context.

As a possible point of interest I don’t think there’s a digital way to recreate the analog studio sounds from the 70’s but on the other hand there’s no way they could do what people are doing today either.
