Requiem for the Dead Musicians

http://www.booksillustrated.com/User...idby/I846e.jpg

Death eventually comes for all of us, but some deaths happen more dramatically, unexpectedly or more violently. In this thread, let's share stories about those past musicians whose deaths stand out from the overall blandness of history and celebrate their lives as well! Hopefully, people won't find this too morbid to be interesting. :)

R.I.P. Petri Ilari Walli (1969 - 1995)

http://www.kotiposti.net/akiko/mirro...mages/foto.jpg

Petri, the guy with the blonde hair in the middle up there, was lead singer, guitarist and frontman of the finnish prog/psych/space rock band Kingston Wall. He was very much creditable for the artistic direction the band took. He'd travelled in India and was deeply inspired by eastern culture which is immediately appearant if you ever listen to one of KW's 3 albums. He was also interested in norse mythology.

Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, he must have also struggled with depression. Not long after their third album, Petri broke up the band to be on a hiatus for unspecified time and went for another trip to India. Not long after he came back to Finland, in the summer of 1995, he jumped to his death from a church tower in Helsinki. The reason for his suicide still remains a mystery, though some believe it may have been caused by a broken heart. The song "For All Mankind" from their last record is by some regarded as his suicide note.

At least his music lives on :)

If this piqued your interest and you feel like checking them out, their two first albums I and II from 1992 and 1993 are both good. Especially the second!

Now, let's see some more stories with death in'em please!

Nice idea for a thread this. Once I've had a good think (aka sleep) and listened to an album or two I'll see if I can contribute more worthwhile than a post like this one myself :D

I know it's his wasn't so much of an "under the radar" death, but I was pretty bummed out when I'd heard Jay Reatard had died on January 13th of this year. His earlier material with The Reatard didn't do much for me but I really fell in love with The Lost Sounds' Memphis is Dead and his solo albums, Blood Vision and Watch Me Fall. He managed to release quite a bit of music with numerous projects while he was alive. He had passed away in his sleep and reportedly died of "cocaine toxicity, and that alcohol was a contributing factor in his death."

lucifer_sam 03-05-2010 10:18 PM

As sad as it is to see someone pass away the guy was practically begging for it. Complained about flu-related symptoms the day of, and decides to get loaded on blow and booze anyway?

If it was an accidental death I should think he carries his namesake well.

The story of the demise of Gram Parsons has always fascinated me. Not so much his death (morphine overdose) but what happened to his body after he died.
Some time before he died, Gram Parsons stated that he wanted his body to be cremated at Joshua Tree National Park in southeastern California. After Gram Parsons died, his stepfather decided to have the body sent to New Orleans for a private burial.
Two of Gram Parsons friends, found out about the intentions of his stepfather, and stole the body from the airport, before it could be sent to New Orleans.
They drove the corpse, in a hearse, to Joshua Tree where they tried to cremate it by pouring five gallons of gasoline inside the open coffin and throwing a lit match inside.
The two were arrested several days later for stealing the coffin (there was no law against stealing a corpse) and were fined several hundred dollars.
They were not prosecuted for leaving Gram Parsons remains in the park.

You don't need a reason to struggle with depression. Some people are born with it, or develop it, for no reason at all.

But good thread. I like the morbidity. ;)

Well, I'd say if you're depressed because your neurochemistry isn't right, that's still a reason. :p:

Glad you like the thread! There are not too many stories here yet, though.

Write more, people!

Elliott Smith
I've always been fascinated with his music, but his tragic and disturbing death has always added a sad note to his music for me. He battled drug addiction, alchoholism, and depression, and was found dead with stab wounds in his stomach.

BTW, I hadnt heard of Kingston Wall until just now. I'm digging it....

Jimmy Sullivan- stage name The Reverend (Tholomew Plague). You can argue all day about how Avenged Sevenfold sucks, but you can't argue that he was one of the greatest rock drummers of the 2000's. Found dead in his home on the 28th of December 2009. The details of the cause of his death haven't yet been finalized and/or released.

On a more personal note, he is one of my biggest influences, and I don't even play drums.

Keith Relf, (Yardbirds, Dread Zeppelin [Tribute Band], Renaissance, Armageddon)
Died doing something he loved. A singer and guitar player. Not known by many.
He died while playing his guitar in the bathtub. Don't laugh, it's not a joke.
R.I.P.

Birth name Darrell Abbott, best known for his work with Pantera. Shot dead along with several others by a schizophrenic fan. The whole story is pretty interesting, check it out http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimebag_Darrell

There's a vid on Youtube^. It's poor quality but then again it isn't something you would want to see in HD.

Zaqarbal 03-19-2010 02:02 PM

An "accident" during autoerotic asphyxiation  is an "interesting" cause of death. Apart from the only hypothetical case of Michael Hutchence (INXS), Wikipedia mentions Kevin Gilbert.

David Carradine doesn't count. He was only acting :):

http://weblogs.variety.com/.a/6a00d8...1f1b970b-320wi

EDIT: Ops! I've found an earlier case: Frantisek Kotzwara (1730-1791). In fact, it's the first recorded case.

Brad Delp (June 12, 1951 – March 9, 2007)

"The nicest guy in rock 'n roll"

http://static.gigwise.com/gallery/braddelp-dl.jpg

Brad Delp is mainly famous for being the singer of rock band Boston whose tremendous self-titled rock classic debut from 1976 is one of the best selling debuts ever with sales surpassing 17 millions. Brad's also known for his impressive range and for his kindness.

Anyways, Brad Delp was found dead in his bathroom a few years ago by his then girlfriend and fiancee. He was resting on the floor with his head on a pillow and a suicide note on his chest saying :

"Mr. Brad Delp. Je suis une âme solitaire"

The part in french means "I am a lonely soul". To kill himself, he had placed two smoking charcoal grills in there with him. He had also written a stack of suicide letters for different family and friends. I was genuinely saddened when I found out about his suicide .. Such a sad end for such a great guy and amazing performer. Boston rocks and Delp's definetly one of my favourite singers in rock!

WARNING graphic image below

This has always been the musician death that has fascinated me the most. Dead, singer of the black metal band Mayhem, was always known to be quite a strange person. Unsurprisingly, he was fascinated with death. He was known to bury his clothes in the ground for weeks before a show. He was also known to play while carrying a bag with a dead crow in it, which he would breath into to "get the stench of death in his nostrils". He is also credited by many Norwegian black metal bands as the first to wear "corpse paint".

It is not surprising, then, that he committed suicide. While staying in a cabin in the woods, the other band members returned to find Dead with slit wrists, a slit throat, and a shotgun wound to the head. He left a note that simply said, "Excuse all the blood." Aarseth went out and bought a disposable camera and took pictures, one of which was used on the cover of "Dawn of the Black Hearts". It is also rumored that they made a stew of his brain "to absorb his wisdom" and sent bits of his skull to other band members they deemed worthy to have them.

All of this, plus the murder of their guitarist Euronymous by Burzum leader Varg Vikernes, have lead to the huge legend that is Mayhem. They definitely didn't get by on the quality of their music.

someonecompletelyrandom 03-29-2010 03:02 PM

^ Maybe you might want to add a little warning to that post. I've seen the image before but still... it's pretty damn graphic.

EDIT: Also, I've heard the brain stew thing was just a myth. They did however take pieces of his skull and give it to people they deemed worthy.

duga 03-29-2010 03:10 PM

Yeah, maybe I should have thought of that...

Guybrush 03-30-2010 05:28 AM

Snuf***e is not cool, but at least I've seen that picture several times before and that takes some of the edge off. Always a little disturbing, though. Nice write-up, duga :)

Insane Guest 03-30-2010 04:54 PM

Wow, sent bits of pieces of skull? WTF? It seems kind of weird that they would use it as an album cover, pretty Fu**** up if you ask me.

lucifer_sam 03-30-2010 04:56 PM

It was a bootleg. And it only goes to show how morbidly untalented the band was, they had to get through two different frontmen before anybody paid attention to them.

And guess what? They still suck.

Johnny Ace

This is one that I always found particularly strange, sad and stupid. Johnny Ace was a big R&B star and early rock and roller who shot himself in the head backstage at a concert in Houston, Texas on Christmas day 1954, semi-accidentally.

From his Wikipedia entry:

Quote:

After touring for a year, Ace had been performing at the City Auditorium in Houston, Texas on Christmas 1954. During a break between sets, he was playing with a .22 cal revolver. Members of his band said he did this often, sometimes shooting at roadside signs from their car.

It was widely reported that Ace killed himself playing Russian roulette. Big Mama Thornton's bass player Curtis Tillman, however, who witnessed the event, said, "I will tell you exactly what happened! Johnny Ace had been drinking and he had this little pistol he was waving around the table and someone said ‘Be careful with that thing…’ and he said ‘It’s okay! Gun’s not loaded…see?’ and pointed it at himself with a smile on his face and ‘Bang!’ – sad, sad thing. Big Mama ran outta that dressing room yelling ‘Johnny Ace just killed hisself!"

Thornton said in a written statement (included in the book The Late Great Johnny Ace) that Ace had been playing with the gun, but not playing Russian roulette. According to Thornton, Ace pointed the gun at his girlfriend and another woman who were sitting nearby, but did not fire. He then pointed the gun toward himself. The gun went off, shooting him in the side of the head.

Hehe, yeah, it's actually pretty interesting that band. I listened to a couple of their songs. Not very good. Their story is a lot more interesting. A murder within the band, not may of those. And that Death was one strange character. Buried his clothes, sniffed a dead crow before shows? Thought he was a creature, not a human? Amazing.

someonecompletelyrandom 03-30-2010 09:54 PM

I've listened to a couple of Mayhem songs. It's not horrible, it's not even bad. But without the deaths it would be nothing. As was brought out, they have a far more interesting story.

Salome 04-24-2010 08:25 PM

Good call with the Mayhem post.

I can't really beat that, but i always found Mark Sandman's death quite interesting.

He was the lead singer and bassist for the band Morphine. He died onstage in Italy of a heart attack. He was 46 years old.
The strange thing was that before he got into bands he worked as a taxi driver in Boston and one night one of his punters stabbed him in the heart. He survived, but was obviously never the same health-wise.
If you haven't heard of Morphine, listen to them NOW! They are truly something else.

Also, R.I.P. to Peter Steele from Type O Negative- not really an "interesting" death (it feels so wrong to type those words) but a great big gorgeous giant of a man.

Inxs (Michael Hutchence)

I always liked the original funked up style of the band INXS with Michael Hutchence on lead vocals, (good stage presence), this is one of my favorite singles, Great song for the weekend.

On Oct. 20, 1977, legendary Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd’s tour plane crashed in Mississippi, killing six, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines.

Known as "The Day The Music Died"

http://jaksview3.files.wordpress.com.../musicdied.jpg

At about 1:00 am in February 3, 1959, the plane carrying three of rock music's brightest stars took off into a blinding snow storm and crashed into Albert Juhl’s corn field about fifteen miles northwest of Mason City in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. Here's a shot of the same field, taken in 1999.

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Jiles P. Richardson, and pilot Roger Peterson were dead.

Cliff Burton

I'm sure most people know who Cliff Burton is, but for those of you that don't he was Metallicas bassist on the first three album. His death is an extremely bizarre one, in my opinion. Burton was crushed to death by a bus.

During Metallicas tour for Master of Puppets the band was spending a lot of time on their tour bus. Cliff Burton complained about having to sleep in a small cramped area on the bus, so Kirk Hammett and Cliff decided to draw cards too see who got to sleep where on the bus. Burton won the game and wanted to sleep in Hammett's bunk by the window. So, that evening Burton laid down in Hammetts bunk to get some sleep. A bit before seven AM while riding down the interstate in Sweden the bus, according to the driver, hit some black ice and flipped off the road throwing Burton out of the window and crushing him under the bus. However, its commonly believed that the bus driver was drunk and there was no black ice. The accident was investigated, and such and never was there any evidence of black ice. The driver was never charged with anything. Cliff Burton was 24 years old when he was killed.
