Nirvana ruined rock music. Who agrees?
 

Rock music in the 80's was awesome! There were great bands with awesome talent like AC/DC, Van Halen, Def Leppard, etc. The music was fun and full of energy! Bands actually knew how to play their instruments well.

Then along one day came Nirvana and a new revolution of no-talent boring depressing whiny music started. These "grunge" bands barely even knew how to play their instruments, but somehow got popular. I remember the first time I saw one of Nirvana's videos (whichever that first popular one was), I thought to myself "Is this a joke?" "How did these kids with no-talent actually get a music video?" "This just sounds horrible!". But little did I know that was the beginning of the destruction of rock music.

Opinions?

My opinion? Both genres were terrible. 80's hair metal was annoying frontmen with whiny voices singing about nothing of any importance to instrumentals that sounded exactly the same in every band. Grunge was exactly the same way, except their lyrics were self-pity filled garbage backed by three or 4 chords.

"Along one day came Nirvana..." Coincidentally not 5 minutes ago I just finished watching the documentary Hype about the Seattle music scene (aka grunge) and posting about it in the movie thread. Nirvana didn't ruin music, nor were they the first to make the kind of music you're bitching about. They were just the ones that big labels and the media exploited the most.

Aside from that, how is it their fault that no one after them has made rock music that YOU like?

Plus honestly your opinion doesn't hold much weight when you're praising bands like AC/DC, Van Halen, and Def Leppard. I don't really have anything against them, I liked each one at some point in my life, but come on...they're hardly worth calling "awesome talent." And for the record I wouldn't use the phrase "awesome talent" in reference to grunge bands, either. I just happen to enjoy some, doesn't mean I think they have "awesome talent."

Van halen is undeniably one of the greatest guitarists in the history of rock. AC/DC are one of the most consistent bands to have ever existed (they have over fifteen platinum albums ffs) and def leppard are good to.


I agree that the genre "grunge" (or whatever it's called) isn't as good as the old 80's metal/hard rock but there's a couple of bands in that genre who are okay.

I still say the best rock was in the late seventies - late eighties. Most of my favourite bands/artists fall under that time line. There's a few exceptions but not a whole lot, maybe a dozen bands after the late eighties I consider on the same level as people like Van Halen, Guns n Roses, Metallica, RHCP etc

I think it's really stupid to claim that a single band ruined an entire genre.

+ Nirvana were brilliant, but even if they weren't to claim they ruined rock music is silly. No different from when The Libertines/Arctic Monkeys came along and started a wave of bands like The Kooks and the Pigeon Detectives etc.

Doesn't mean music's ruined, it means there are a few cack bands about.

Still doesn't mean shit to me.

To say Kurt Cobain can't play his instrument is a ridiculous claim, if you think Angus Young is good but Kurt isn't then I don't really understand that.

They both had a method of song writing, and they stuck to it.

So being one of (possibly THE) greatest guitarist of all time doesn't mean **** to you? That doesn't reflect talent? What exactly are you looking for, a guy who can juggle lions while simultaneously smoking a cigar clenched between the ass cheeks of a monkey and humming the entire score of Hector Berlioz's: The Trojans.

Wtf. No offence but that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard anyone say. Firstly, Nirvana didn't just pop up out of nowhere to ruin rock music. Secondly, if you listened to most of the lyrics in their songs they don't sing about self pity - that's like emo or hardcore music ..... or something and thirdly, Kurt Cobain - and the whole band for that matter had a hell of a lot of talent.
