For me its, Rise Against, Bright Eyes, and Brand New.

I think pretty much all Led Zeppelin songs show their songwriting talent.

In terms of that aspect of their writing ability just like all others they're undoubtedly just top class.

The first that comes to mind for me is Built to Spill.

On the metal side, Graf Orlock and Genghis Tron kick a lot of ass in the lyrics department.

Not strictly my favourite band but lyrically The Flaming Lips are absolutely amazing, there's a depth and mystery to their lyrics that very few bands have.

The Smiths and Joy Division are two obvious bands really worth mentioning. Morrissey with his poetic mixture of despair and humour and Ian Curtis with his painfully honest and gloomy lyrics.

The Silver Jews have some excellent lyrics as well, they slipped my mind earlier.

Also, Belle & Sebastian and Arab Strap are some good Scottish bands whose lyrics are consistently brilliant.

Solid choices, I'd add Manchester Orchestra and Rod Stewart to this thread

A band I listen to, Sonata Arctica, has really decent lyrics to most of their songs. Also, I really enjoy the lyrics of The Bare Naked Ladies as well. Also, I listen to a christian band called Casting Crowns. They write really compelling and strong lyrics. Really 'make ya think'ers

Incubus, for sure. Brandon Boyd is a genius.

Steely Dan's lyrics are sarcastic, obscure, dark, funny, deep and inestimitably confusing. I love it.

XTC have a lot of lyrically tremendous songs; "Real by Reel" has great stuff on it, both in the way it's sung and the things it can mean.

Public enemy are so brilliant it hurts.
