I think pretty much all Led Zeppelin songs show their songwriting talent.

My Final Answer: Led Zeppelin

littleknowitall 06-05-2010 09:51 AM

The Stone Roses.
Manic Street Preachers.

In terms of that aspect of their writing ability just like all others they're undoubtedly just top class.

Alfred 06-05-2010 09:52 AM

The Clash, Lagwagon, and Alexisonfire's debut.

Charlemagne 06-05-2010 10:10 AM

Okkervil River without a doubt. Also Iron & Wine is a great one too.

GravitySlips 06-05-2010 10:41 AM

Smog
Red House Painters
Black Flag
Pavement
The Fall

many more but there's 5 to start

TheCunningStunt 06-05-2010 11:25 AM

Lyrically? The Smiths and Joy Division are untouchable.

James 06-05-2010 11:58 AM

This will just consist of people naming their favourite band.

^this

Plus the band X and Family Fodder (although sometimes the lyrics are hard to get)

Maybe the reason that they do is because they favor them for their lyrical talents.

Dr.Seussicide 06-05-2010 12:03 PM

Ummm, let's see...

Circle Takes the Square
Eleventh He Reaches London
Carissa's Wierd

I can't think of any others...

Sansa Stark 06-05-2010 01:21 PM

Oh ****, I forgot Crass!

sidewinder 06-05-2010 01:22 PM

The first that comes to mind for me is Built to Spill.

Alfred 06-05-2010 02:07 PM

On the metal side, Graf Orlock and Genghis Tron kick a lot of ass in the lyrics department.

Zer0 06-05-2010 03:31 PM

Not strictly my favourite band but lyrically The Flaming Lips are absolutely amazing, there's a depth and mystery to their lyrics that very few bands have.

I accidentally touched my head
And noticed that I had been bleeding
For how long I didn't know
What was this, I thought, that struck me?
What kind of weapons have they got?
The softest bullet ever shot

The Smiths and Joy Division are two obvious bands really worth mentioning. Morrissey with his poetic mixture of despair and humour and Ian Curtis with his painfully honest and gloomy lyrics.

aye, good shout.

The Silver Jews have some excellent lyrics as well, they slipped my mind earlier.

GravitySlips 06-05-2010 05:27 PM

Also, Belle & Sebastian and Arab Strap are some good Scottish bands whose lyrics are consistently brilliant.

Solid choices, I'd add Manchester Orchestra and Rod Stewart to this thread

A band I listen to, Sonata Arctica, has really decent lyrics to most of their songs. Also, I really enjoy the lyrics of The Bare Naked Ladies as well. Also, I listen to a christian band called Casting Crowns. They write really compelling and strong lyrics. Really 'make ya think'ers

Alex/ 06-06-2010 03:29 AM

Incubus, for sure. Brandon Boyd is a genius.

Unrelenting 06-06-2010 12:03 PM

Tom Waits

Dilettante 06-06-2010 12:51 PM

Alesana
Halfwayhome
Nakatomi Plaza

OctaneHugo 06-06-2010 02:04 PM

Steely Dan's lyrics are sarcastic, obscure, dark, funny, deep and inestimitably confusing. I love it.

XTC have a lot of lyrically tremendous songs; "Real by Reel" has great stuff on it, both in the way it's sung and the things it can mean.

Public enemy are so brilliant it hurts.
