Default Polaris Prize 2011

So, in preparation for the 2011 Polaris Prize (Canada's answer to the Mercury Prize), I've determined myself to listen to all of the shortlisted albums before the awards on Sept. 19. I intend to get to the longlist as well, but I don't consider it urgent.

Polaris Shortlist:

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Austra - Feel it Break
Braids - Native Speaker
Destroyer - Kaputt
Galaxie - Tigre et Diesel
Hey Rosetta! - Seeds
Ron Sexsmith - Long Player Late Bloomer
Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges
Timber Timbre - Creep on Creepin' on
The Weeknd - House of Balloons

I got fairly involved in last year's Polaris awards, and even streamed the ceremony to watch all of the performances, and this year's nominees look better than last year's. I've already heard about 1/3 of the shortlist, and based on that I expect The Suburbs to get it, but personally prefer Kaputt.

Anybody else care, or just me?

Neat, a music competition that isn't between the Top 40. Granted, I'm choking on pitchfork indie, but these nominees are far better than the garbage that the Grammys annually produce.

I think this year's Polaris noms are even more pure than the Mercury noms were, to be frank.

I'm not a big fan of Hey Rosetta! Wouldn't mind seeing Timber Timbere win it, but that seems unlikely.

Either The Suburbs or Native Speaker will win.

I'll take Hipsterfork bands over that Top 40 nonsense any day. When does this Polaris thing start?

Sept 19th, and it can probably be streamed online like it was last year. There's a countdown timer on the site and everything.

The show starts in about 6 hours, and (I do believe) can be viewed on the Polaris website.

I'm definitely watching, as I'm excited to see a performance from every nominee.

Polaris Prize is one of the few music awards that's worth giving a sh*t about, a) because it's solely about artistic merit and b) because it's Canadian artists. It's a cliche thing to say, but I feel that what Canada lacks in quantity, we definitely make up for in quality. I'm really proud of Canadian music in the past 20 years.

And F*cked Up winning the prize in 2009 was too beautiful.

I think Braids had the performance of the night though. Pretty good year.
